MISS BONDFIELD AND ITS " BAD TRADITION.”

Miss Margaret Bönfeld, formerly of Hongkong and now Parliamentary Secrt tary to the Ministry of Labour, visiting the new. centre for teaching domestic crafts to unemployed girls in Liverpool, on July 26th, said to the trainees

Stand upon self-respect for the dig. uity of your work, and don't be dis- tradition couraged beestuse we have of domestic service in this country. Domestic service belongs to the higher category of womens work, and demands as much skill as tailoring or teaching. I resent the word 'alavery and the bug- gestion that by becoming a domestic you the stepping down in the social scale. Teach mistresses by your efficiency to res pect you. A mistress must be put in her place. She is the unskilled person, and you are the skilled person. But don't go to the other extreme and have silly ideas about what you may do and may nest. By adopting an attitude of superior status to an inferier status, mistresses lose much of the helpfulness of having as it were an accomplished, daughter of the home to relieve them of worries and
