Domestic service belongs to the higher category of womens work, and demands as much skill as tailoring or teaching. I resent the word 'alavery and the bug- gestion that by becoming a domestic you the stepping down in the social scale. Teach mistresses by your efficiency to res pect you. A mistress must be put in her place. She is the unskilled person, and you are the skilled person. But don't go to the other extreme and have silly ideas about what you may do and may nest. The girls were informed that we have a bad tmulition of domestic service in this country, thus receiving hearty" official discouragement from continuing in sae occupation for which they were being trained at the public expense. But it would be interest. ing to know what meaning Wins Bond- field supposed her phrase to possess. Ac. cording to the ordinary use of language, it is to be interpreted as meaning that deniestic service in England has been pers formed under conditions inferior to those abroad. The theory that a domestic sur- wait on the Continent has an easier, more comfortable. and better-paid position than in Eangind is strange and new that it was hardly fair to offer it to the girls of Liverpool without adding that nobody who knew anything of the facts could believe it, But this was not Miss Bondfield's most remarkable dictum. After ranking together domestic service, tailoring, and teaching as all skilled oc cupations, which undoubtedly they are like the work of the Prime Minister and gan that of the cobbler-Miss Bondfield went on to instruct the girls that: A mis- tress must be put in her place. She is the unskilled person, and you are the Taes, skilled person. Miss BondGeld's wonderful hypothesis appears to be that no woman who cur ploys a domestic servant enn possibly have any skill in domnestic affairs. What ahould we think of the judgment of any speaker who told the studenta of another truining school that they were to go out into the world to put those who employed them in their places that from the first day of their working lives they were to think of themselves as thoroughly skilled and their employers as incom- petent 1 No one would dream of defending anch ill-conditioned nonsense if it were addressed to any but domestic servants. Unfortunately, we have only too much evidence that the spirit in which Miss Pondfield spoke that domestic service ought to be made imprasible--is Jomisiant in the Labour party"
