THE STONE OF DESTINY. PROTEST AGAINST REMOVAL.

A meeting convened by the British- Tarnel World Federation, was held at the Central Hall. Westminster," to protest against the removal of the Scottish Stone of Destiny from Westminster Abbey to Holyrood Palace under Mr. Kirkwood's bill. Strong protesta against the bill were received from local branches of the fede ration at Manchester, Salford, Worthing, Liverpool, and the British branch. Apologies for absence were read from Sir William Joynson-Hicks, the Bishop of St. Albans, and Sir Thomas fuskip.

M.P.

Lord Gisborough proposed she follow. ing resolution

This meeting of citizens of London respectfully begs to protest to the Prime Minister and Parliament against the pro- posal to remove the Stone of Destiny from Westminster Abbey. We believe the stone

Lord Gisborough Raid a Princess Tamar Tephi, a daughter of King Zedekiah, from whom King George was descended, took the stone to Ireland, where she mar ried Achide. King of Ulster. For 800 yecars it was used as the coronation stone of the Kings of Ulster. When Fergus the Great was crowned King of fons, the Stone of Destiny was taken to Scotland, and from thence it was brought to Eng- lund by Edward I. Lord Gisborough went on to say that the stone did no belong to any one country, hat, to the Empire. He really believed that if the attempt to remove-it was meant seriously Lee people of Great Britain-including Scotland-would rise and fight for its retention. (Loud cheers.) The resolution was passed after speeches in support had been given by Mr. Herbert Harrison, Major James Knowles, General Coventry Williams, Rev. Ebenezer Fox (Australia), Rev. Arthur Chambers, the Rev. Gregory Rrstall, the Hon. Miss Aters Douglas, the Rev. Joseph Gay, and Mr. J. J. Morey.

A new landing stage at Tilley. new Putrance to Tilbury dock and a new dry dock..

The extension and improvement of Surrey Commercial Docks

Dredging operations with a view to increasing traffic at low tide. Another important development scheme which is under the consideration of the Ministry of Transport is the construction of a new road from the City to Vistoria Docks.

This is a big project, estimated to in- volve an expenditure of £3,000,000.

The scheme is still in its initial stages, but the proposal at present put forward is that the road should pass through the Whitechapel district, a con- siderable part of it being carried by a viaduct.

The Government would probably bear half the cost of the various local author.. ities interested in the improvement-the. London County Council, City Corpora tion, etc-subscribed the other half. It is hoped that the negotiations inseparable from such a huge undertaking will be successfully completed in time to ensure the necessary legislation next year.

BETTING AND LOTTERIES, "THE PRESENT TASTE FOR GAMBLING."

A review of the annual report of the Commissioner of the London Betropoli- tan Police says:-

Illegal betting continues to increase. Last year 3.325" convictions (in the majority of cases, for street. betting) took place, and fines amounting to £30,200 were inflicted. as compared with 3.282. convictions and fines of £3,711 in 1999. Such figures (says the report) are suff cient to show that the police are not inactive, but it is equally clear that no police action will be effective in eradicat ing so. widespread a habit,

Sweepstakes and lotteries of all kinds also continue to increase in numbers, both as a means of raising money for laudable objects, and for the purpose of advertisement and commercial gain. There! is much ignorance as to their illegality, and the

do not appear to realise

the

PP for fraud which they

afford, if allowed to multiply unchecked. Another objection to some of those

in aid of charities is that, though honestly conducted, a considerable pro- portion of the proceeds is paid to pro- fessional promoters. The readiness with which

any kind of lottery or competition containing some shadowy element of is subscribed for, without any adequate knowledge by the subscribers of the chances of success or of the system, il any, on which the prizes will be dis tributed, is remarkable evidence of the present taste for gambling."

The Foreign Office ought to be less Bupine in looking sfter the interests of pall investors in this country who have invested their money abroad-r, A. M. Samuel, M.P.
