It would take a volume to relate his life's experiences--how as a young man, threatened with consumption, he sailed the Pacific to Australia, where he rode on horseback through the bush, how he visit ed the South Sea Islands, travelled in California, crossed America and finally, returned to England. All these journeys he accomplished with no other resource than a
remarkable gift for lecturing. Throughout his travels he never forgot the call, and once home again he entered the Wesleyan Methodist ministry. After his ordination, in the midst of his cir. cuit duties at Liverpool, he took out a complete curriculum as a medical student, and obtained the degrees of Doctor" of: Medicine and Master of Surgery of Dublin University, and the Licentiate of the College of Physicians of Edinburgh. Having acquired the medical knowledge. his wish was to use it for the benefit of mankind. Accordingly he offered him- self to the Wesleyan Missionary Society.
