PACIFICA FREIGHT

CONFERENCE,

BILLS OF LADING BEFORE SHIPMENT.

On inquiry at the offer of one of the lides engaged in the Pacific-lnited Kingdom Conference, a representative of Lloyd's List was informed that they were not aware of any change in arrang" ments, be that the issue of bills of lading gore landing objected to by Corvign shipping companies, especially the Ame rican shipping operatórn, whose tiovern ment strictly prohibits the practions

There would appear to be no reason to doubt the power of the various steamship owners which compose the Pacific Freight! Conferener to arrive at a conclusion in futurs to refuse to issue bills of lading before goods are shipped on board. would be necessary to meet in some way the difficulty arising from the fact that postal facilities between the Far East and the United States and Canadian Pacific parts are such that in all probability many ships in which the goods are ried would arrive at their destination, before the hills of lading, if these dueu- taents am forwarded subsequent to the I departure of the"ship from her" loading

port.

The staleuat in regard to the Ame-1 rican inverament, strictly prohibiting the practice refers is is understood, ta the practice of prematurely issuing { "shimond" bills of lading.

quently has no bearing apon Atlantic and other services on which the United States Government vessels are employed, where many thousands of

bills of lading, ceived for shipment. as the phrase goes these, received for transportation.

SNAKES THROW MEN INTO RIVER. FIGHT TO DEATH WITH

ANACONDA.

NATIVE SWALLOWED. Stirring stories of struggles with monster Anacondas in the Amazon were told by Mr. Antonio Bergelt, who cap- tired the footer" recently installed at the Zoo.

Acting as collector in Brazil for Mr. G. Bruce Chapsán, F.Z.S.. of Tottenham Court road. it is the business of Mr. Bergelt to secure specimens of such erra - - tures as are likely to interest visitor fo European menageries.

In the Amazon his canor was twice np. set. and the party Sad to swim for the show surrounded by the huge suakes. which send most of their line in the river

had as companions on the expedi tion an Englishuan named Morris and half a dozra Indians." said Mr. Bergelt, and whilst passing Maroyo Island, on the Amazon, we noticed the head of a large Anaconda protruding from the

water.

THE CAPTURE.

"The Indians have a great dread of 21bese snakes and becoming pauic- stricken, they upset the canoe, pitching us all into the river.

On Frenching the bank we watched the movements of the Anacondas, and found that they congregated in the water under tree trunk, spanning a creek Jike a bridge.

Here they were quite still with their heads above the surface, so we fashioned pole with a noose at the end and, clambering along the fallen tree, caught one round the neck and hauled it to shore, where we til it to

tree until

we had constructed a box to put it in.

The snake which is the one" now at the Zoo, was 16 feet long and as an anaconda is. I should say, twice as strong ana bes constrictor of equal length, the packing of our captive was as dificult as it was dangeruss (The anaconda, though not vehimous, can inflict a severe bite, whilst being a constrictor, it is eap- able of crushing a man with ease.)

We captured a second anaconda at the same spot, and this gave birth to 94young ones on the way to the coast

The largest anaconda we encounter- ed was fully feet long, but as we had no means of dealing with a live snake of Wie enim across. this size we killed it this one. wit several others white cross ing the river with a cargo of pigs. The anabcodes. in their eagerness to make a meal of the pigs, caine alongside the canne and caned their necks over the side. Dug more we were upset, but to one was harmed."

++

Mr. Bergelt explained that anacondas rarely attack man unless interfered with, but he recorded an exception,

A mounted messager conveying a large amount of money from qué town to another had been missing for some days," he said, "A search party found his horse grazing in a clearing of the forest. Near by a huge anaconda was basking in the sun. The party killed the make, and upon opening it they discover. rd the body of the unfortunate messenger, with boots, clothing and equipment in- tact. The skin of the actual specimen is Down the Para-Museum.”
