“Mr. O'Connër cites is an example of what we are, up against the contracts entered into by the Great Northern Rai way and the Chicago, Milwaukee and St.. yal Railway with the two leading Japanese steamship lines. According to the Shipping Board chieftain. these ronds have agreements with the Nippon Yusry Kaisha line, which makes its American headquarters in the port of Seattle, "and the Toyo Kisen Raisha line, which sends its vessels out of San Francisco.

MALARIA AMONG SEAMEN.

A notice has been issued by the Mer- cantile Marine Department of the Board of Trade dealing with malaria among merchant sramen. It is pointed out that there is a good deal of sickness and many deaths amongst crews and passengers on ships running to Africa, India, and the Far East. It is stated in the circular that is one line of steamers trading out af Liverpool no fewer than 531 cases occurred in the course of twelve months. Mr. Alfred Harmsworth, who was the father of the late Lord Northcliffe and of Lord Rothermere, entered the Middle Temple, in 1868 and was called to the Bar.in 1869. He had chambers in Pump the South- court, and was attached Eastern Circuit. He died in 1888.

The administration of the fond is placed by the donors entirely "in the hands of the treasurer and benchers for the time being of the Middle Temple.
