MEANEST MEN IN THE

WORLD.

BY SIR HARRY LAUDER.]

Let me say, in the first place, who aro | not the mean meu. They are not public entertainers; they are tot comedians; and they are, certainly not Scutsmen. Neither can meincess be attributed to men who ate fond of work. They are industrious, and they feel that they mdat forge aheid and make money. but they are not mean.

After all, it is the hard worker who does the tast good in his day and genera tion. The last bee in the swarm is the one that brings the most honey to the hive. Work is a gift; those who do not possess the aptitude for it defend their laziness by calling it the artistic tempera- ment, and labelling the industrious as the mengest men in the world.

I suppose we shall never get away from the taint of menaress against Scotsmen. It is one of those jokes that have coine to stay-like wireless and porridge. In the remote past sume one wade a joke at the expense of a cautious Scotsman, and that joke has spread all over the world and persisted to this day.

I suppose that if at that time soinehody had said that an Englishman's chief characteristic was his ineanness, the joke would have had the same remarkable run, said we should still be laughing at"jokes about an Englishman and his money.

In considering the question of meanness one must have regard to the mentality of the person who is looking for generosity. I have a shrewd suspicion that the mean est of all men is the man, who is most out-spoken in his criticism of Septtiah generosity. I have never known any such critic wandering but with pockets emptied by charity.

It cannot de argued that any one nation is more meat than the rest of the nations. Hospitality is common to all; peauness is to be found hat it is. I believe, uncom

I have bought mon in all countries, bananas in the streets from Italians, und when they have been a penny each I have never been able to get three for two pence. If the hawker is an Irishman and hot an Italian, he is no more generous,

*IRISH GENEROSITY."

Some years ago I had an experience of Irish generosity which, to my inind, takes some heating. "Four of us hired a. jaunting ear for an hour's jaunt into the Country. Our jarvey had a pretty mean type of humour. It took him an hour to drive us. After be had been driving the hour, and we expected to be back hemise we found that we had reached the furthest point from our starting place. At this minute our jarvey pulled up. looked round at us anal, with a triumphalt grin, an nounced; Boys, your time's up. You'll have to hire me for another hour to take ye home or get out and walk back"

One of the meanest men I ever met was an American. In America. you minst know, you enn send telegrams to your friends and they have to pay the charge at the other end. Fortunately for some of our celebrities that dors not obtain here. This Americao sent a telegram to his mother congratulating her on birthday- Collect !"

A cautious man is one who takes some hard thinking to think the right thing at the right time. I have heard it said that I have been given much free publicity by the reports about, Scottish meanness, The value of such to me. I estimate at about eighteen-pence a joke because the advertisement was not true. The truth is that no Scotsman is mean; he is only saving, and is naturally färifty. He gets fun, ton, out of the caatious life fun in watching the recklessness if others.
