THE NATIONAL CHRISTIAN
COUNCIL.
WORK OF THE CHURCHES FOR ANOTHER YEAR.
fur on.. TURNER]
The last day of the second annual There are two powerful, reasons why meeting of the National Christian Council air transport mast not yet be expected
was largely taken as with questions of to conform to methods proved by future policy and work. The meeting. perience suitable to road and rail transeused in the afternoon of Tuesday, May port. One reason epererts the aeroplane, 20th with an address on Publicity by the other the man who flies' it.
Council Members," by the Rev. Chu Hao Jen, and a devotional service conducted jointly by Mr. D. E. Hoste and Rev. 8 C. Huang.
."
The aeroplane is a vehicle still in the infancy of its development. It is much more delicate than any type of road.or rail vehicle used for regular transport. The consequences of small defects in it may be far graver than those of serious defects in road and rail Vehicles. www. far greater responsibility rests upon the mechanics who make and tend it..
Risk to the pilot is an undeniable factor. The risk to the driver of a rail or a road vehicle is relatively insigni ficant. Alotor buses, taxi cabs, and rati way trains are a strongly built, and their anchanism is so robust, that reason. able eare redvers risk of breakdown, to a very small point; but, what is far more! important, breakdown is not fraught with danger. It is possible to run a matur hus or a railway service with low grade vehicles; the driver's safety is not imperilled: if there is a stop on the rofil and the driver, cannot put matters. right he sends" a message to the garage.
As to the quality of the men, the aero. plane pilot must possess not only great Skill, but also a proved capacity of re- source in emergency. His physical en dition is such an important factor that-- he has to be very strictly examined at frequent intervals. -
Responsibility rests also upon the rall wayman and the 'bus driver, and the driver of any street vehicle needs skill and nerve, but all will agree there is a vast difference between them and the air pilot.
MEST WORK TOGETHER.
Д
It has been put forward during thei past few days that the regular air line pilot will soon become mere air chauffen To the contrary, with the in- troduction of more scientific methods"on" the air lines he will have to be trained and' clucated to a higher pitch than the present average, and will use instru ments which require expert handling. He will have to fly by night as well as by day, and in all weathers..
With regard to the policy of the coming year the Council decule it would pay chief attention to the following problems: () The Indigenous Church; (2) Rural Life (1) Home: (4) Investigation and Co-ordination of Industrial Work; and (5) the continuance of the study of International Relations. Popular and religious education are also to receive special emphasis.
The following list of special financial provisions indicates something of what the Council intends to do during the ensuing year:
