DAMAGES AGAINST DOCTORS.

Damage of £25,000 were awarded on February 27th by a special jury in the Retion brought by Mr. William Smart Harnetta Kem fruit and hop grower, who had been detained over eight years in various asylums: When on probation be visited the offices of the Commissiones in Lunacy, in Vietoria-street, Westminster; on December 14th, 1912, and was detained and sent back to Malling Place, West Malling, Kent. Subsequently he was sent to various institutions, and on October 15th, 1921, he escaped. He contended that he was wrongfully detained. Defendants were Dr. Charles Hubert Bond, a Commis sioner in Lusacy, and Dr. George Henry Adam, licers and manager of Malling Placs They denied that he was wrong- fully detained.

Mr. Justice Lush suggested that a judicial inquiry might be held with a view to providing safeguards in the future.
