THE WESTMINSTER ELECTION..

Lospos, March 19th. Thero were lively scenes, no to-day's polling in the Abbey Division of West- minster, where Mr. Winston Churchill's hurricano electioneering during the past week has awakened the sober Tory stronghold to a life it has not known since the days of the hustings when Charles Fox snatched a victory owing to the efforts of the famous Duchess of Devon, shire on his behalf.

Even a Duchess is not wanting to-day to complete the comparison, for the Duchess of Westminster took the field personally in a motorcar on behalf of Mr. Churchill, taking market-women, porters, and others to the polling booth,

Mr. Churchill, with arer 200 cars, and Mr. Nicholson with 150 had a marked advantage in this respect over their or ponents, who, together. had less than a dozen.

The former's cars were decorated with coloured streamers, parked in all districts at an early hour, and let loose before eight o'clock in the morning to pick up voters.

An exceptional number of business people voted early, while no other con- stituency is able to show such distin- guished electors who entered the polling stations today, including the Dean of Westminster, Mr. Philip Snowden, Mr. Baldwin, the Marquess of Lincolnshire. Mr. Arthur Henderson and his sons, and General Sir Dighton-Probyn,

Mr. Churchill was sera everywhere, ex changing qhips with his opponents and cheerily greetings supporters.

Mr. Churchill is confident of a sub- stantial majority, but general opinion is inclined in favour of the official Conser rative belief that Mr. Otho Nicholson, who is a nephew of the late member, will win easily, with Mr. Churchill probably second.

The Labourite, Mr. Brockway, relies on a split vote among his adversaries for victory, while the Liberal, Mr. Scott Duckers, only hopes to keep Mr. Chur chill out

MR. CHURCHILL SMOKES A CIGAR.

Lobos, March 20th.

Mr. Winston Churchill, nccompanied by his wife; was the first candidate to arrive at Caxton Hall, where the votes were counted: He walked about smoking & cigar, occasionally halting to chat with his wife.

وا

During the closing moments of the count rumours circulated alternatively, that Mr. Churchill and Mr., Nicholson had

When the count was finished a cheer broke out among Mr. Churchill's supporters, and Mr. Churchill,

rushed down the room and shook hands with his wife...

Heanwhile the figures were being checked at the Returning Officer's table, and it was soon known that Mr Chur chill bad been defeated. He returned from his wife towards the table, looking very pale. He then went back to the far end of the Hall

When the figures were announced, the crowd outside, which was largely Labou- rite, started singing "Poor Old Chur: chill to the tune of Poor Cock Robin,"

After the recount, Mr. Nicholson moved the customary vote of thanks to the Re turning Officer.

Mr. Churchill, seconding, hoped that the venerable constituency would not be unduly disturbed by the excitement of a Serce and vivid contest.

Mr. Churchill subsequently addressed his supporters and said that the date for the poll had been fixed for the minimum legal period. He considered that this bad adversely affected his chances in the extraordinary and astonishing attempt that had been made. Another two or three days. he ani, would have pro duced a different result. nr this must be taken into consideration when he con- sidered his future relations with his great constituency. He added that this was the twelfth election he had fought. Certain ly it was the most exciting. He was too qld a campaigner to be disheartened by the ups and downs of political life. He believed that he had sncceeded in setting on foot a morement which would exercise a patent, and possibly, a decisive, in- Aluence on the immediate political future, He looked forward to the day when i great Conservative, Party, in its senses, Bd accupying a broad and progressive. platform, united with large numbers of Liberals, would repulse the Socialist attack, and inaugurate a Government worthy to rank with the Unionist Govern ments in the days of the Great Salisbury, LILIAN BAYLISS OF THE "OLD VIO."

Loxtos, March 19th The Oxford University authorities have fotified Lilian Bayliss, the famous letsco and managerces of the OM VIC" Theatre, of their intention to confer on her the bonorary degree of Master of Arts.

She is the second lady associated with the Old Vie" to receive a University horour, the other being Srbil Thorndike. MAK WHO FEETENDED TO CURE

LONDON, March 19th. The guillibility of the public in medical matters is evidenced by an extraordinary case et Leeds Assizes, where a sexa gevarian miner, damed David Williams has been convicted on five charges of in- flieling bodily hurt and obtaining money by false pretences, r

It appeared that the prisoner, who is absolutely devoid of medical, knowledge, professed to cure cancer and treated patienter with ointment and liniment con Laining corrosive drugs generally used for treating horsex. The patients suffered intense pain in consequence.

The prisoner was fourd insane and ordered to be detained during His Majesty's pleasure."

DISTINCTION FOR A WOMAN,

LONDON, March 19th.

A tall, slim, pale-faced woman, wear- ing rimless eye glasses, talked easily and clearly to an interviewer to-day about Economie, her distinction in which led to her appointment as the only woman member of the Commission which the Chancellor of the Exchequer appointed to enquire into the National Debt.

LADY ASTOR, STIES UP WESTMINSTER.

LONDON, March 1st. A lively breeze in the House of Com- mous was evoked by Lady Astor, during the debate on the Admiralty Vote. re- marking that she knew how difficult it was for Labour, members to reconcile defence with the Sermon on the Mount. If they learned as much in the next six weeks, she added, as in the last six, even Singapore would be safe in their hands She was only sorry that some Back- Beachers had not got a job so that they could learn a bike

Mr. Lansbury: That in a

sample of good Christian love and charity.

Lady Astor: I try to live in Christian- ity and not brag about it.

The Labourites protested against the use of insulting remarks.

The Chairman said that be had not heard any.

Lady Astor, eertinuing, said that the only trouble was that she said things that are true, and they did not like it.

Mr. Lansbury: Go on with the Gospel.

Subsequently, there was much laughter when a Conservative referred to the Front Benchers as the biggest lot of land-lubbers even see.

Mr. Kirkwood asked whether it was in "order for a member to use such a word in reference to His Majesty's Govern. ment. (Laughter.)

HOW TO GET GOOD SERVICE FROM

MICHELIN TYRES.

tell you

Keep tyres pumped up to correct pressure for the load they have to carry. We ca

what this should be..

When tyres are under inflated there is continual internal friction between the foundation cord and the rubber, causing overheating of the tyre and consequent rapid deterioration.

Water can also enter causing rust, resulting eventually in the rims having sharp edges which cut the walls of the tyre near the bead.

Most cars in Hongkong run on under inflated tyres with the above disastrous results. Have your wheels examined front and rear for trueness and tracking alignment. It are at fault in this respect the tread of the cover is subject to a grinding action which quickly destroys the cover.

they

Keep tyres free from oil and grease,"

Start and stop gently and take comers slowly.

Lastly buy MICHELIN tyres from us and follow the above advice and

tyre satisfaction is assured,
