There has been a series of daring" burglaries in London in the last few months, most of them perpetrated in

AUTHORISED Cartital - broad daylight. Valuables worth £9,000 SUBSCRIBED AND PAID Ur were taken from a jeweller's shop RIM window a few mornings ago in Duke Street, St. James's, and the thieves got away on bicycles, before the passers-by had recovered from their surprise, and could make any effort to stop them. The plan is to smash a window with a stick. sweep a couple of trays of rings or watches into a bag, jump on a bicycle and ride off. The chief on a cycle can dart in and out among the traffic, or dash along passage-ways, whereas, a man in a motor- car would run the risk of being held up in a block at a street-crossing.

SHANGHAI

I heard of a good illustration of the daring of the shop thieves using bicycles. A West Enil dairyman, who was at his shop about seven in the morn ing, saw a young man' coming out of a costumier's next door carrying a bundle" of silk blouses, which he threw into a RUSSO-ASIATIC BANKMANILA tradesman's carrier at the back of his bicycle. The dairyman was inclined to be suspicious, but the youth remarked with a broad grin, Do you think I could get this little lot down to Petticoat The dairyman, Lane in balf-an-hour 3" his suspicions disarmed, returned cha for cha. and the burglar, with a friendly ware of the hard, sailed off with his valu- nhle haul.

DEMOCRATIC COURT DRESS.

Tennyson's oft quoted line. "The old order changeth yielding place to new" finds fresh application in a social sense since the Labour Party climbed into power. It is obvious that Labour Minis- ters, some of whom hare scarcely over wore a suit of evening clothes. could not. be expected to garb themselves Court dress, assuming that they had the money to rig themselves out. The traditional Court uniform is won- derfully designed to convey an impres aion of, splendour, with gold lace and gold thread that make the wearer res plendent in the soft glow of artificial light when attending the Court. But the cost ranges from about £120 to 200. The King now permits those who desire it to wear a modified Court dress-black tail coat, knee brevches, and silk stock- ings and the total cost of this garb is BOWERN & CO. about £15. This is what, I suppose, may be called the democratic touch: It opens the opens the door in a sartorial sense to St. James's and Beckingham Palace for the future. Possibly Creus M.P., will not be able to appreciate the change, since he will be prevented from throw- ing his money at you," as the saying is, but there is no reason to fear that th Royal concession will result in a loss of dignity at Court.

The innovation has been approved by writers in the Press, who are agreed that the diplomatic and official circles will supply all the colour necessary to make the Court functions the brilliant affairs they have been in the past. There is ala good reason to believe that the Queen will follow the example of His Majesty by permitting a less costly form of dress for Ministers' wives.

THE QUEEN AND LABOUR LADIES.

Although no definite plans have as yet. been made. I have reason to state that the Queen, tactful and thoughtful as asual, proposes to hold informal recep- tions in the afternoon shortly at Bucking- ham Palace in order that Her Majesty. may have the opportunity to meet the wives of the minor members of the new Government... In the absence of some such arrangement there would not be much chance of the latter being received in any marked 'way by the Queen,

Tae reception is to be held in Her Majesty's private drawing-room, aud the idea is to meet the guests as Dy private lady would meet her friends or acquaintances in her private house. There will be no ceremony at all understand that Queen Mary is entirely responsible for this very pleasant inno- vation, and I hear that it will be ex ceedingly appreciated by the wives of the Labour men.

DRURY LANE'S NEW CHIEF

No & HOM. BOLD, BHANGRAT

Member British Chamber of Commerc®

'W, BOWERN, Fellow of (Shanghai). Kr. T. the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers, Luber porated by Royal Charter, London,

It is a tribute to the place which Drury Lano Theatre occupies in public estimation that the retirement of Mr. Arthur Collies, the managing-director, 19 regarded almost as a national event. He has been not only managing-director! but has also acted as producer for the last 25 years. In 1990 he succeeded to the position so long held by the late Sir Augustus Harris At that time there, were "people who predicted that the glories of the old house had departed; but so far from this being the fact the theatre under 'Mr. Gollins's management more than mahitained its prestige. Drury Lane pantomines and dramas have drawn crowds that could not be assembled anywhere else in London, and there were spectacles of the most sur prising magnificence, and startling scenes! in a long succession, each of them a triumph in its way?

Mr. Collins's successor at Drury Lana is Mr. Basil Dean, who has a reputa tion as a great organiser. He has also enthusiasm. Twenty years ago he was only earning £a week as a member of a travelling company in the provinces, and he certainly knows the ups and downs of an actor's life. During the war he proved his ability by running over a score of theatrical productions here and in France for the amusement of the troops. The famous house in Drury Lans will test his capacity in quite a new field of dramatic art; for the theatre has traditions peculiar to itself. HLB.
