MISSIONS AND NEW CANONS.

On Wednesday, March 19th, the House of Bishops and the House of Representa tives met in joint session, at Canton as the Board of Missions of the Chung Hua Sheng Kung Hui. According to custom the whole of the third day of the Synod is always kopt for the mission work of the Chinese Church.

From its foundation the C.H.S.K.H. has recognized that responsibility for missionary work rests upon every mem- ber of the Church. The sphere chosen was the province of Shensi, a province in which the Anglican Church had not previously opened work, and a start was made in the Provincial capital, Sianful The work there da varried on by a purely Chinese staff, and supported by Chinese offerings, and it is hoped that as soon as possible, it will be placed under the leadership of a Chinese

Bishop.

In the absence of the President, Bishop Norris presented the Third Triennial Re port of the Board of Missions, The Report showed that real progress is being made in the work at Sianfu, the total number of haptized now being 260. The Boys' School is doing well and has now 190 bays.

The financial support for the "Sheast mission is obtained by assessing each

diocese at a certain sum, which it is ex- pected to raise each year: for the past three years the total assessment has been $7,000. The actual mun raised in 1992 was 28,953: the, 1923.contributions had not all been received when the Report

they will exceed the asacsment. In addi tion to the anodal assessment of each diocese there have also been special ap- peals for money for land and building. As the work increases more money is required and the Executive. Committee asked that the assessment should be raised from 87,000 to $10,000; this figure, after some debate, was reduced to 85.500, 22, Puttinger Street. Tel. G. 3212. although the representatives from some dioceses volimtarily offered to increase their diocesan quota if others would do the same.

The Bishop of Singapore spoke on the work of the Church among Chinese ib the Dioceses of Singapore, Labuan and Sarawak, and the Philippine Islands. and it was agreed that each of these dioceses should be allowed to send one clerical and one lay representative to the triennial Synod of the C. H.S.K.H., with the right of speaking but not voting, in the house of delegates. The Bishops of these three dioceses also asked that a Bishop and a Chinese priest should be sent from Ching to visit the Chinese con- gregations in their dioceses, es a mission of help.

At later sessions much of the time of the House was spent in the revision of the Canons of the C.H.S.K.H. This, of course, is not work of a very thrilling nature hut before a Church

can become autónomous it must provide complete Canons for its administration, and "dis cipline. The Canons which aroused the most interest and the keepest debate werè those dealing with the formation of new dibceses and the appointment of assist ant Bishops.
