It was in the minds of some people that the labours of the bishop were to be re warded by a translation to a see in Eng. land and that the bishop, would bear such. translation with equanimity and Mr. Kar ran thought the sending of a telegram might be an amusing “leg pull,”

I think the reason for sending the telegram given by Mr. Karran's counsel makes the joke a singularly offensive one, commented the stipendiars.
CHARGE OF BIGAMY.
A story of muddled matrimony which inspires reflection on the modern attitude towards marriage has just been investi gated by the Assize Court at Châlona-sur- Saône. The case concerned the romances. of Comte Ferdinand de Jouffroy d'Ab- bans, the scion of ore of the oldest noble families of Burgundy, who was charged with bigamy, an offence for which an old French ins prescribes the punishment of hanging. But in this case neither, the accused nor bis judges nor the general public scened to take the matter serious- ly. The Comte, who was born in San Francisco, where his father held a French diplomatic post, met an English girl, Charlotte Grelin, at Falkestone, early in 1914, and married her at a local registry: This romance was of short duration, for the Comte soon applied through the French courts for divorce. While his suit was still pending he fell in love again, and in 1919 married, in France, llc. de Saint Innocent, though his divorce from Charlotte Grelin was not granted until three years later. It was for his three years of bigamy before the divorce was granted that the Comte was now called to account. But he regarded his English marriage as a joke. After having un
