A GERMAN STORY.

The fate of the ancient crown that was once the crown of the Holy Roman Emperors is involved in some obscurity. It is known to have remained in the possession of the late Emperor Charles after his deposition. He was supposed to have been its last wearer, hut a writer in the Stuttgart review, Neue Merkur, Herr Friedrich Burchell, shows that it has been worn in public since then. Ho describes the incident as follows:---

The word was soon whispered round that this drunken aristocrat was the adminis trator of the property of the former Austrian House, and that the crown was the ancient German Imperial crown which for n thousand years had been" the honoured symbol of German power and greatness.

It appears from "published reports -in various German newspapers that the ancient crown remained in the possession of the Emperor Charles when the Aus trian Empire was broken up and a finan cial settlement was arrived at with thei Last Emperor of the House of Hapsburg- Lorraine. All attempts to recover this. old and honoured treasure from his hands and from the control of his household, which Was everlastingly in financial straits, proved vain. The crown is res garded as a masterpiece of eleventh cen- tury goldsmith's craft.--Timer.

VILLAGE "GHOST" JUMPING CHAIR AND WALKING BOOTS.

Uncanny manifestations are causing a commotion in the village of Monkton Heathfield, near Tahnton (says the Belton: Journal and Guardian). Mr. Gardiner, a jobbing builder, erected a house for his own occupation, and during the last few days articles of furniture have been moved about the house without the aid apparently of any human agency. So nerve-racking has the situation become that Mr. Gardiner and his son po longer strep, chere. The trouble began when Mr. Gardiner was struck on the back of the neck by an orange, which a moment be- fore had been reposing on a plate on the dresser. Other inexplicable, occurrences are related. A chair jumped from the floor on to the table and a box which was on the table in the kitchen wildenly TORG several feet into the air and then fell to the ground. A pair of borts then walked backwards from a cupboard. and two Prager Books and a large postcard album few from a bookshelf to the op- poterside of the room

The climax was reached when a lamp rose from the table and sailed gracefully to the kitchen floor. These things happen not only at night but during the day. A meal-times rives have moved the length of the table, accompanied by the pepper box.
