The remainder of the field (seven) were content to follow Mr. Bruthers' impetuous pony at a distance, and it was not until the Straight was reached that racing really commenced. The Hematite, Loch Rannock, King Alfred and Mountain Hask all went away in a bunch. In the home scamper the Jast-named gut the best of matters, Loch Rank second and King Alfred third. Sir Paul, with Leander Dahlin, scored his second win of the day in the tenth race, it also being his second successive win. It was extremely difficult, to follow the ponics through the haze which hung over the Valley but at the Village Bend. Leander Dahlia was seen to go to the front with Lady Severn's Duku being ridden into second place. There was a keen tussle between these two ponies for first place and they fought it out deck and neck right to the winning post, the Dahlia neck. Mr. just getting in first by Soares on What-to-do finished third and returned a good dividend of $57.80. Pet Mouse, a favourite was not placed.

The Derby winner, Court- field. took second place and Sir Paul's Sunshine Dahlia was third. The field was disappointing, the only others to turn out being Fern Leaf and lialto Star, About the race there is little to say From a good getaway Fern Leaf made the running, followed by Rialto far, with Courtfield last. Past the stands first time Cock of the North challenged seriously and took the lead, never losing it. Leav. ing the Rock Rialto Star dropped behind. the other four going on in a bunch with very little between them. Courtfield was swerved out on entering the straight and set a glear path home, but he could not catch the favourite, who got first past the post with
Sunshine big margin. Dahlia game on well for third place. 107, 476, 995, 412, 826, 1188.

THE IPIRACY OF THE STEAM
LAUNCH KWONG TAK." FORTY-TWO PIRATES TO BE SHOT.
TWO WOMEN GET TEN YEARS'.. IMPRISONMENT."
It will be remembered that the steam launch Huong Tak left Hongkong on the 20th January and was subsequently cap tured by pirates the same evening at Bau Hoi beyond Castle Peak The following day the launch was sighted by the Chi- nose Revenue Launch Pallas in Heung Chau Bay. The Officer in Charge called apon the steam launch to stop. After a fight the launch was sunk and over forty men and two women were removed and handed over to the Chinese Authorities to be dealt with..
A communication has been received by His Majesty's Congul-General at Canton from the Civil Governor of Ewangtung that forty-one pirates have been sen- tented to be shot and two women have been imgisoned for ten years, while investigations are continuing in the case of two other men, ineinding the Captain of the launch.

Three impressive events preceded the actual funeral ceremony, The first, in order of time, was the Lying-in-State at the Cathedral, which lasted from Thurs day morning until yasterday morning, and was attended by thousands of the Colony's Catholic community. Then yes. a Requiem terday morning there was Mass with full ritual, during which the Cathedral was crowded with devout Catholics. Finally, there was the proces sion from Glenealy to the Monument, and then to the cemetery Chapel.
At the Mass the coffin, of plain oak, reposed on a bier surrounded by candles. The late Bishop's mitre was at the head of the coffin. The service was conducted by the Bishop of Macao, Bishop da Costa Nunor, assisted by the Procurator General of the French Mission, Vary Rev. Fr. L. Robert, the Procurator General of the Spanish Mission, Rev. Fr. Noval; the Chinese Pastor, Rev. Fr. Paal Lu, and other priests.
Government and Consular representa- tires, as well as most of those present at the funeral ceremony, attended Mass. At the end of the service a aquad of Italian sailors presented arms and, to the strains of Chopin's Funeral March," the coffin" was carried out of the Cathedral on the aboulders of six mourners. Italian naval officers in full-dress uniform marched with bowed heads at the rear of the proces sion,
The official procession from Glencaly took the Lower Albert Road and Garden Road route to Happy Valley. There were, however, numerous, other proces. sions. The children from many of the Catholic schools in the Central District, for instance, were marched to the Monu- ment. Queen's Road East and seme by way of Praya East and Wanchai. A large. number of small parties were to be sees proceeding, towards the general meeting place, the Monument, throughout the early morning hours. The official proces sion was headed by the St. Joseph's troop of Boy Scouts. Then caine: Sisters and scholars of French Convent, Sisters, scholars and orphans of the Italian Con- vent, the Italian Industrial Boys' School, the Masters aut boys of St. Joseph' College, the Heads of several Catholic Religious Orders; the Philharmonica Band, an armed detachment of sailors of the Italian warship Calabria, and a large party of Catholic clergy. Sailors from the labria pulled the hearse, in which the ohn was conveyed from Glenealy The clergy who conducted the funeral service together with a huge concourse of mourners, joined the procession at the Monument. The long line of people then entered the cemetery and passed through an avenue formed by Italian and French sisters and convent children to the Chapel. Preceded by clergy six repre- sentatives of the. Portuguese community bore the con from the hearse, and tha gathering followed. Only a small num ber of people, however, were able to ob tain entry into the little Chapel to wit ness the final rite.
There were hundreds of floral tributes to the memory of the dead prelate, in- cluding wreaths from: H.E.
