BURIED CITY OF THE SEA. A MONGOLIAN, POMPEII BEING EXPLORED.

In the deserts of Mongolia, far away from cities and civilization, & rumour originated same years ago of a dead city abandoned by its inhabitants for con- turies, and buried ever more deeply beneath shifting sands, says a writer in the New York Times. In 1907 a Russian scientific expedition, led by Professor Kozlov, sat out with the purpose of search ing for the city. The task was difheult, because the nomadic tribes in the region were suspicious of strangers and slow to give information. When the Russian ex ploring party approached Kara-Khoto with their Mongolian guide, they were compelled to plough through sand drifta 15 feet deep. It was this sand, together with the arid climate of Mongolin, that had preserved the city's walls and monu. ments, over a period of many centuries. The neighbouring tribesmen, who had settled near the city ten generations be fore, declared that it always had been there as far as their records reached.

AN ANCIENT LIBRARY,

The streets and" houses of Kara-Khote have been largely obliterated by waves of sand. But Koźlor's party found many interesting memorial in the Mongolian

dhist temples and Mohomedan mosques. There were packages of Chinese paper money, bearing grin inscriptions threaten- ing counterfuiters with the loss of their beads. There were silver orcaments and money, carefully hidden away by the original owners.

The most important discovery of all was a cone-shaped monument outside the city walls.

In this monument was a library of 2,000 books, written in seven Piledriver Wagons, ste, Enstern languages. In the thirteenth or fourteenth coutury the Chinese had sent out an army to capture Kara-Khoto. For several years they besieged the city in vain. Then a Chinese engineer com ceived the idea of cutting off the water supply. Ro blocked up with sand bags the river which formerly Bowed through the city, and turned its course in a different direction. The people, desperate with thirst, dug a deep well inside the walls, but failed to get enough water to sustain life. Then the population buried all ite treatures. The chief of the tribe killed his wife and daughter with his own hand, and ordered a mass sortie through a breach in the wall. The doom-

and Chinese. There was a collection of more than 300 sacred Buddhist pictures, painted on back-grounds of cloth and silk.. There wore many statues of Buddhist gods OFFICES and goddesses. Traca of former canals were found in the city.

The axpedition extended its research to re-discover a cave in the vicinity which ie was said no white man had ever seen. The nomads who lived about the lake made every effort to prevent the travel

it. On the lers from launching a boat other side of the lake the Russians found three Buddhist monks, wild 'men, with shaggy, matted bair, and beards that had never been shaved. Penetrating into the monataing of Northern Tibet, the party encountered band of mounted robbers, swarms of who attacked them with arrows, These were no match fe: tho firearms of the Russians, and the robbers were beaten off.

A new exploring party has been » 01- ganized for a three years tour. Professor Kozlov, who, again accompanies the ex pedition, says its purpose is purely scien- tifc. The first year will he spent in Mongolia, the second in Tibet, and the third will be devoted to the homeward journey, which may be through India er Chinese Turkestan. Two women will be included in the party.

I allowed him to tell his story, which 67, QUEEN'S ROAD CENTRAL

Was to this effect: "I have seven hun dred dollars to pay Mr. Black, who has luckily won this money, and I came on board to see if he is on this ship.

We know full well that no such person exists on any ship that he intends raiding but his object was get somebody in- terested in his "lucky" bogus lottery, and then to ask him to buy tickets at five dollars each. He then tells you that the final draw will take place in two days, and the result of same will be sent by him to your address. Now, whoever may plank his mouey down, may be sure, that he will never ace his money again, and very possibly not the crook either. But my number on this day happened to be No. 13, which was exceedingly unlucky for him, for I got my own back at last. It was a case of the biter bit.” I did not wait for the return of my swindled money of cine long years ago." I did not detain him long, but I feel sure he heard the Angels calling, This is no place for me Honesty pays in the end."
