DIFFICULTIES OF UPPER YANGTZE NAVIGATION.
FULLER DETAILS OF THE DAS TARDLY 4 TZESUI" PIRACY.
Realer's Correspondent at Ichaug writes:-
The steamers on the Upper Yangisze have had a very difficult task to perform for some time past, as they have been constausly subjected to firing from irres ponsible men on the banks, but in no case hitherto bas there been such a serious affair as that of the Teesat." There have been nine small steamers carrying on the winter trade on the upper river, and while some of them have been subject to indiscriminate fring, there has not been a y definite attack on any of them. The Kingwa was fired on recently, and re- turned the fire, when a man was killed on shore. When the steamer arrived at Chungking, the news had preceded her, and General Yang Sen made some claims on her. In the end it was agreed that the steamer should pay the sum of 85.000 na equipensation and this money was paid over at Foochow to the General com manding the troops there.
THE TZEA "PIRICT.
It is clear that the pirates who held up the Tresmi got on board as passengers at Wanhsion, but there was no suspicion that they were armed, until after the steamer was anchored. Two or three inore mer appear to have joined them from the shore. When they made their attack they new that the captain would have arms in his cabin, and it was appar ently their plan to make A07**

thrown overboard. Some one later on BOWERN asked for the captain, and the pirates answered that he had gone ashore, thus trying to cover up what they had done. His cabin was looted of most of its con- tents, and among other things taken was a rifle, a sporting gun, a revolver and all the ammunition which he had for them. He had also a splendid camera, porated by Royal Charter, London and that was taken, though the case was lett. The steerage passengers were not much molested, but two three of the pirates stood over them with drawn revolvers. while the others were being "cleared out." There is a brisk trade between these two ports, and several of the Chinese had hundreds of dollars in cash and paper, all of which had to be handed over. The best of their clothing was also taken, and in all the haul must have care, to between 820,000 and 830,000. Of course, the pirates had a boat at hand, and made for the shore, where they simply disappeared into the darkness. The village of Kanchipcheng was on the apposite side of the river, and it appears that the firing was heard, there, for some- of the local militia pus of in boats to core to the rescue. bût were too late.
THREATENING LOFTERS.
There have been suspicions that the members of the Junkmen's Guild might be at the bottom of this outrage, but it hardly likely, and it is learned that representatives of the Junkmen's Guild saw the River Inspector at Chungking and solemnly assured him that they had nothing whatever to do with the outrage in any way. It is further, known that the pilots of the upper river steamers have been. receiving threatening anony mous letters, which are supposed to come from some one in connection with the Junkmen's Guild. One of these said that it had been arranged that only threa steamers should be allowed to travel during the low water season, and now there were 12. The letter asked whether they meant to take away the means of livelihood from all others but themselves. and added filthy abuse of them and their wives.
!
Such are the conditions in which trade is now being carried on, and it will be no wonder if British and other companies who are engaged in this business make strong representations to the authorities asking them to allow their ships to carry guards for the protection of the officers on.. board.
CAPT, "BRANDT'S BODY.
It was some fishermen who found the body of Capt. Brandt in the water. They showed every respect for it, carefully wrapped it in silk, and placed is in a coin When the Kings canie along, it was put on board her and taken to Chungking, where an inquest was held by the British Cornul. The party which searched for and found the body only asked the comparatively small sum of
37 for their work.
BILLS OF LADING MEANING OF PHRASE ACT OF GOD."
In the course of an interesting address. ou Bills of Lading before the Chartered Institute of Shipbrokers, recently Mr. C. J. Singer suggested that at some future time the phrase

It was pointed out in the discussion that the true test to apply to all cases where' on Act of God was alleged was whether or not the damage caused by an Act of "God could have been prevented by reason- able precautions on the part of man, Mr. Singer suggests that "irresistible" should he the critical worl Another which would closely express the meaning would be 4
