DANCING DENOUNCED. CARDINAL'S DRASTIC DECREE,

A somewhat drastic pastoral letter his been issued at Quebee by Cardical. Begin, head of the Roman Catholic hierarchy in Canada. To this pastoral Cardinal Begin condemns dancing, and warns the faithful that confessors will regard a violation of his decree as a grievous offence. The decree specifically condemns many modern dances as lascivious, naming the tango, fox-trot, the turkey trot, the camel trot, the shimmy, the cheek to check, the one- And other similar step, the two-step. dances, and also the polka and the waltz, which, the Cardinal's pastoral declares, 13 lasciviously danced now. He continues: "We strongly condemn these dances ns direct occasions of sin, and we expressly forbid them throughout the whole diocese, so that if anyone-which may God for hid-should dare to indulge in them or permit them to be danced in his house, that person would commit a grave sin of lisobedience.

Cardinal Bégin's pastoral-also-con- dons the illicit manufacture, sale, and snuggling of liquor, and warns the faith- ful against certain classes of moving pic tures and dramas, and announces that special instructions have been issued to parish priests and members of the clergy regarding modest dress. He also en tions Catholics against non-religious so- cial clubs, which may bring religious and national indifference.

This pastoral, which has been read in all churches in the Quebec archdiocese, is expected to be the prelude to similar documents in other dioceses of Quebec Province, and possibly throughout Canada, by the Roman Catholic authori ties. It was prepared at the recent Synod of the Catholic hierarchy nt Que- hee, presided over by Cardinal" Bégin Comine shortly before the Christmas and New Year festivities, the pastoral creat- ed consternation in social circles, with the result that many, public balls and private dances arranged at Quebec and other places in the archdiocese were cancelled.
