PEEPS INTO THE FUTURE. [From the Hongkong Daly Press of 1934.]
YESTERDAY'S FIRACIES.
Among the most daring of the piracies that were carried out yesterday was that of the Peak Tram.
It was
a cool calm afternoon, when many of the most prominent of the broad-winners of the Colony were return- ing from their labours of the day by the non-stop tram which leaves the lower station at 3.30 p.m. After the usual acrum at the gatea, the "fortunate" onos settled themselves for what is nor- mally an uneventful and comfortable journey. If anyone aoticed that thero was a sinister-looking Chinese at the outer end of each of the front seats, over whose legs be had to scramble as he got into his place, no one made any remark on it, but, as the tram approached Bowen Road station, each of these men was seen to be humbling in his pocket. Immedi- ately afterwards the bell was rung, and the tram was brought to a standstill. Accounts vary as to what happened next, but all agree that on looking up everyone found a revolver pointing at his head, In a moment the brakesman was pushed overboard, to be followed immediately by the conductor. One of the pirates riezed the brake, while the remainder of the ruffians rapidly wont through the pockets of the passengers Watches, notebooks and tic-pins were quickly collected, and, before anybody quite knew what was up, the tram was restarted. As it began to gather speed the brakesman, slipping a catch on the brake lever to hold it down, gare a shout and all the pirates jumped for the woods. The car continued its upward course towards the Peak, but was brought to a stop by a passenger. His presence of mind unfortunately made the matter rather worse than ever, for the tram stopped on the very middle of the big bridge just bolow the upper station, and it was some time before the bewilder ed engine driver could be persuaded to bring it to the top so that the passengers could get out and give the alarm. The pirates thus had a good start, and by the time the Police arrived on the spot all Sub- signs of them had disappeared sequent investigations have, however, produced several excellent clues, from which valuable results are expected. The losses have not yet all been reported, but it is believed that they amount to a large sum in money alone. In addition much valuablo jewellery was taken.
A reward of 8500 is offered for informa tion that leads to the conviction of any of the criminals.

MOTOR ACCIDENTS.
There is a gratifying decrease in the number of motor accidents reported On Garden Road there were only seventeen last week, as againit twenty-nice the week before. Of these, only tea were fatal. This satisfactory state of affairs is doubtless due to the advanced condi- tion of the road-widening operations.
Police casualties lave, on the other hand, bees above the average. No less than five members of the Force were seri- pusly injured owing to their zeal in test- ing the new racing type of motor-cycle which has recently been issued to the

INDIAN CURRENCY.
THE EXCHANGE PROBLEM, Sir Basil Blackett, the Finance member, speaking at Delhi on December 4th on behalf of the Government of India, referred to the recent resolution passed by the Associated Chambers of Commons urging the Government not to disturb the exchange as the present time, and . tered into a justification of the
Polity hitherto pursued with respect both to ex- change and currency. Sir Banil inciden- tally

Admitting that the two shilling rate of exchange for the rupeo was fictitious, the Finance-member pointed out that, in the precont
circumstances, the Government had had no choice but to adopt an arbitrary rate, which, he asserted, was wo illusory as to be quite harmless. The Government of India had reserves suffici ent, in base of a crisis, to support the ex- change to the catat, necessary to main tain the value of the rupeo at sixteen DOREN, :*
