WIN FOR THE NAVY.

Set:200 to win, the Army had lost one wicket overnight for . When the game was resumed yesterday morning, Cockell was disnussed without any addition to the. score. Armstrong and Allfrey were bowl- ed with consecutive balls by Evans with 14 on the hoard. Dodds and Kent car ried the score to 35, when the former was caught with a useful to to his credit. Hattersley-Smith stayed with Kent until 79 appeared on the board, and then he was bowled by Boyle. Just previous to his dismissal, when Tafford was bowling. the off bail was to fall while the ball was in the wicket-keeper's hands, The batsman walked towards the lion, but was reened, as the umpire at the bowler's wicket said he was not out, the ball not having hit the wicket. Kent, who bad played a faultless innings of 41. was out hw, to Pafford, after which the end soon' cume for a total of 108, leaving the Navy, victorions by 100 runs.

A feature of the Army's second innings was the brilliant wicket-keeping of Lieut- Commander. Lockhart. He did the work of both wicket-heaper and slip. His taking of the bowling on the leg-side was superh, the man fielding at fine-lcg having nothing to do. There were no hyes in the second innings, the extras being made up of three no-halls, three leg-byes and one wide.

THE CUSTOMS SURPLUS. RUMOURED DRASTIC MOVE, BY THE POWERS.

The Far Eastern Timoi (Peking) under. stands that the Diplomatic Représentatives of the Powers signatory to the Boxer Pro- tocol of 1001 have sent home to their res jective government an identic telegra phic note requesting authority to seize the surplus of the Chinese Customs collec, ¦ tions now lodged in the foreign banks and apply it to the payment of the arrears of the Boxer Indemnity at rates of ex- change in accordance with the provisions laid down by the 1901 agreement,

While confirmation of this information is obviously impossible to obtain it would appear to be in line with the general policy mcently proclaimed in relation to the Gold Frano issue.
