THE POWER STATIÓN CALAMITY AT SHANGHAI, SPECULATION AS TO HOW IT

OCCURRED...

The Y.-C. Daily News gives the fellow- ing account of the calamity which was briefly reported by cable last week

Three foreigners were killed and and seriously injured in a terrific explosion which occurred shortly before 11 o'clock OD November 15th, in the urbing house at Riverside Power Station. At least four. Chinese the number of fatal Chinese casualties is variously reported between four and 10-al lost their lives, while some 13 others are in" hospital, suffering from burts and other injurie The foreigners killed were:.

Mr. T. Mooshiy, charge engineer, Mr. W. Whitelock abo a charge engineer. Just a leg, which was amputated soon after the explosion. It is hoped that he will

recover,

The explosion, occurred in one of the 20,000 KW turbines, which was theing Tus on trial for purse of barracing. As the three.engineers who were in charge of the test ate killed, it can only by bur mised what caused the accident,

Arar as is known the turbine was tuoigat rmal speed disconnected from its genera. tor. It is thought that the speed must have abnormally increased and that the emergency trip valve the function of which is automatically to shut off steam in the event of the turbine over-speeding, may have failed to net, which allow the rotor to attain an abnormally high speed.

THE TURBINE WRECKED. The fact remains that the rotor hurst, and in doing so entirely wrecked the tur bine cylinder and the whole of, the strang turbine itself. The rotor and fragments of the cylinder were thrown in various free- tions in the immediate vicinity. Part of the rolor was hurled against one of the steel columns of the building, from which it apparently glanced and buried fuelf.in the 6,000 volt, switchboard which has recently been erected for controlling the auxiliary plant in the power house. This completely wrecked a section of the switch- board, thus cutting off the supply to the

two main circulating water pumps which | BANKING-SHIPPING-TRAVEL were supplying the condensers of two 15,000 KW machines, running on load

at the time.

The steam end of the turbine is an absolute wreck beyond repair, but it is believed from "superficial examination that the generator is intact and may pon- sibly be ericiable when another turbine is built

for it, a matter of at least 12 months.

Immediately after the accident the power honse was filled with live steam caused through the pipe serving the tur bine having been blown off when the rotor "exploded consequently a total shut down of the power supply took plaer. Tho supply on various parts of the system was restored at 120 p.m. and the remainder as it became possible to clear things up in the power station and get other machine into commission.

It has been suggested above that the cause of the turbine roter bursting may have been due to failury of the over-spees? trip gear to onerate. On the other hand there is al the possibility of the turbine shaft itself having a fhw.. It is too early to attempt to pronounce a definite opinion. but at the moment the former theory is considered the more likely.
