SCIENCE OF KEEPING FIT FOR AND AGAINST SMOKING.
A Medical Correspondent of the Tinies says the discovery recently of a small quantity of Indian hemp cannabis indien or hashish") in tobacco appears to have aroused considerable uneasiness. The "aid arguments against smoking in all its forms have been advanced once more, and we have been told on medicat authority that this habit is responsible for "ront of our present-day ills. Un happily for this view, every serious attempt which has been made to test the claim that smoking is anhealthy has failed. Some years ago, for example, it was suggested that a condition known soldier's heart" was due to the
м
cessive use of cigarettes, A number of to victims of this complaint were invited! to offer themselves for test and smoked the usual gaspers under strict super- vision-Reyonu a slight quickening of the pulse nothing was observed which cond reasonably be called a harmf jeffect. "The investigation, indeed, was of negative a kind that no action: of Any sort arose out of it and the sick soldiers were not deprived of their con solation.
IRRITATION AND CANCER.
More recently some attempts to pro duce cancer in experimental animals by! means of tobacco failed completely. though fear, and certain chemicals easily Thus the theory produce this disease,
that mouth cancers are due to smoking remains largely without proof. It should perhaps he added, however, that "sane evidence exist that a short, hot clay pipe with a narrow bore is possibly a source. of irritation which may lead to this dis ease. A rccdes. wide-bare pipe may be regarded as practically safe. Nor is there satisfactory evidence that smoking causes catarrh of the throat or air passages. Smokers, it is true, suffer from these complaints occasionally. Unless it can be shown that the sufferings of one group greatly excel these of the other the matter is not worth troubling about. According to its erities tobacco, however, is a poison. As such it must neces sarily be injurious. Reasoning of this kind betrays a lack of knowledge of the manner in which the human body, reacts to its environment. It is probable that. in the first instance, most of our every day foods were poisons" We have beeane nccustomed to them. That is, to say we have been able to discount their inimical qualities.
THE SOOTHING PIPE.
Ruses,
The smoker usually passes through a stage daring which, tobacco does "poison" him. He showed, in these days, all the symptoms of an intoxication such as follows the taking of Toud which dis
giddiness. agrecs "sickness, But once he has acquired his "tolerance" these symptoms trouble him no longer) It is merely groteshite to say that a man enjoying a cigar er pipe is sucking ia polson." Indeed such statements. serve only to reveal the fanaticism of the authors...
On the other hand, tobacco is a valuable! sedative the use of which. without dcabt, is most; helpful to many people. Our modern world, with its poise and its easeless calls for action both bodily and mental, must be classed among the stimulants. Exposed to ita hurly burly" nerves become trayed." There is actual need of a mild and fanicuous ant date which can be taken in frequent doses.
EDICINE TO THE FEELINGS. Bloderu men, and women too, ae for tunate in possessing just auch a medicine, to their feelings. They are the tuore fortunate that smaking itself, the act of taking the medicine, is pleasurable. The exact mechanism of this pleasure in a mystery Probably, every sense.contri butes to it in some measure-the feel of the cigar. pipe or cigarette, the gentle puffing sounds, the sight of the smoke, the fragance of the tobacco, its taste. But behind all these is the mind freed." for brief space, from its preoccupa tions. Health is no mere affair of the body. Everything which makes for happi ness, for contentment, for the "equus animus deserves to be classed as a
health agency. Tobacon emphatically belongs to this category. Nor does it appear to matter much what form of There is z anioking is indulged in. tradition in favour of cigars and pipes and against cigarettes: but it is very difficult find on what evidence this tradition is bised. Vast numbers of men and most women who smoke at all aro cigarette smokers. There is no reason to think that they fare worse than those. who do not indulge in this manner of consuming tobacco. The truth is that our world abounds in theories which bave a plausible appearance, bat are quite unsupported by actual observation. The subject of health is specially attrac tive to the makers of these bogeys. Any custom or habit is sure, sooner or later, to be denounced by them. Those of us who like to be presented with evidence. are not heloved of this section of the community. We can afford, Jò, ignore, them and to persist in our enjoyment until it has beer proved that we must pay top heavy a price for it, et

THE
UNION OF SOUTH AFRICA
FOR
13
RESIDENCE, FARMING, TRAVEL, `
The Union of South Africa is of interest to Europeans in the Far East If they are retiring, on pension, there are many pleasant South African towns in which to live. If they seek a career, and have a moderate capital, there is scope in South Africa for planters and farmers. And for those in need of a boliday, the country is famed as a travel and health resort.
The climate is equable. It is sunny but temperate, being neither so laclement in winter as that of Northern Europe, nor so enervating in summer as that of the East. It is a genial, wholesome climate in which Europeans thrive.
The rougher work in South Africa is done by coloured labourers and domestics.. Educational facilities are good, the young can now take their University degrees in South Africa. The larger towns are modernly equipped, and many of the smaller ones are very congenial residentially. There are numerous resorts-moun taip, river and marine, for an occa sional change. Sport is plentiful" The cost of living and income tax- ation compare favourably with those elsewhere.
In short the Union of South Africa is an uncommonly attractive country.

Mr. Robert Grattan, who spent years of service with the 1st Devan Regt. in India and Burmah, writes from the Town Barracks, Exeter-
**My piles began in India through riding on wet saddles, and they caused agonies I shall never forget. Besides smarting and itching, the growthis bled freely and caused great bodily weakness. When I had tried numerous Europ ean and Native remedies I underwent an opera tion in Hospital, still without finding a cure.
Hearing Zam-But highly praised I got box. Benefit and relief came from this splendid haim soon after, beginning the treatment.
