A few years ago Princess Stéphanie, wife of Crown Prince Rudolph, of tragic memory, offered her sister an estate in Hungary if she would give up the Count. Princess Equise did, in fact, go there, but at the expiration. of a fortnight shel quitted the castle that had been handed over to her and returned to her lover. A few weeks ago the couple went to Paris and took a room in a hotel in the centre- of the city. Count Mattachich, who was now 56, had for some time been a phy sical wreck as the result of successive attacks of nervous disease and delirium, and during his last sad days he was tenderly cursed by the woman who had ancrificed so much for him. throughout nearly thirty tragic years.
