A ROYAL ROMANCE AUSTRIAN PRINCESS AND HER LOYER.

The death which took place last month in a Paris hotel of Count Geza Mattathich is one of the closing chapters in a Royal romance and tragedy, the echoes of which at one time and another have resounded in several Courts of Europe, and häve. too, been the cause of much embarrassing consideration in the recesses of the Vati can. By the bedside of this broken wreck of a man, once a dashing cavalry officer

The drama which has thus closed in the modest room of a Paris hotel began nearly thirty years ago in a vastly different milieu, the glittering Court of the Emperor Francis Joseph One day in 1995 the two horses drawing a, carriage in which was seated. Princess Louise, the beautiful wife, then 37 years of age, of Prince Philip of Saxe-Coburg- Gotha, brother of Tear Ferdinand et Bulgaria, bolted in the Prater of Vienna. They were stopped by the young Count Mattachich, between whom and the re- scued Royal lady there sprang up an attachment which was destined to persist throughout life, in fagrant defiance of Imperial severity and ecclesiastical con- demnation and the price of social estrae- ism and loss of worldly fortune.

Princess Louise was de clared to be insane and-was-moved-about. In 1904 from one asylum to another. Count gttachich succeeded in escaping from his Zagreb, gnol. and during a September night, two years later, he, with the aid of a friend, Count Orsini, szutch el the Princess from under the eyes of her guardians at a German watering place to which she had been temporarily taken. Thence-forward the couple, deprived off their properties and under the ban of FU RNITURE the Court and Church were doomed to undergo trials and vicissitudes in various countries. A few years ago Princess Stéphanie, wife of Crown Prince Rudolph, of tragic memory, offered her sister an estate in Hungary if she would give up the Count. Princess Equise did, in fact, go there, but at the expiration. of a fortnight shel quitted the castle that had been handed over to her and returned to her lover. A few weeks ago the couple went to Paris and took a room in a hotel in the centre- of the city. Count Mattachich, who was now 56, had for some time been a phy sical wreck as the result of successive attacks of nervous disease and delirium, and during his last sad days he was tenderly cursed by the woman who had ancrificed so much for him. throughout nearly thirty tragic years.

“MARRIAGE AND DIVORCE IN THE MODERN "STATE," Speaking on "Marriage and Divorco in the Modern State" at the Conference of Modern Churchmen, held at Girton College, Cambridge, on September 26th, Mr. Cland Mullins said it was his sincere belief that in the great majority of enses it was a delusion, when people reached for happiness out of misery by means of divorce. The idea which was so preva. leat to-day that the unhappiness of one marriago could be wiped out by matri- monjal freedout or by a second surringe was usually false. The Churches should work to keep the Christian ideals of an indissoluble marriage ever before the people. and to base our laws upon the nearest practicable approach to that ideal Criticising the Entwhistle Act, he said. Our sentimental legislators have been thinking, of course, of the unhappy wife whose husband is really living in sin, but I think more about the increased temptation to married couples who have passed through the first romantic stages of matrimony into the inore lasting if less exciting, stages of ordinary life and perhaps drudgery,'
