ELECTRICALLY-DRIVEN SHIPS.

SELIPS.

In the Engineering Section if the British Association at Liverpul on Sept... pth a paper by Mr. F. 1. H. Clough on electric ship propulsion was rend. Apart from the hearings, which, of course, could be film-labriented, they were, said the author, no wearing parts in the electrioni equipment, and provide that the equip ment was properly designed it should have an almost indefinite life, Shodhl repairs be necessary they could readily be carried out, and in most cas repairs could wait until the ship reached part. In naval vessels it was often desirable to! run at full power, or at cruising speed. With electrical transmission this could be earried out by arranging that the motor: should have two sets of poles which was equivalent to changing the gear ratio Thus the turbines could be run at full speed when the ship was travelling at reduced speed; and as the power was very much lower at the reduced speed of the ship some of the turbines might be shut down. This gave a very great gain in economy. This practic bad been adopt- el on most of the America naval vergelt. Eletric transmissien euhl also be use fully employed on Dixel ships. The nd- vantages were that the engine schild be subdivided up into smaller units, and could probably hi run at higher speed. The engines could also be started up light, and. cnen started, might be left running even when the ship was stand- ing still. The engines also did not re quire to run in revers direction. ar. reversing could be done with the elec In the cast of the trical equipment. ships being built by Messrs. Cammell Laird and the B. T. H. Company for the United Fruit Company, a large amount of power was required for the refrigerat ing plant in addition to propelling the In this case the Diesel engines were fitted with two sets of generators, Per M.M. Porthos, on October one being used for propelling and the 4th Mr. and Mrs. Zobel de Avala, Mr. other for supplying power to the freezing MacNeary, Mr. Ricard, Mrs. Best, Mr. plant. By using direct current, machi. Giraud, Mr. Bower, Mr. Case, Mr.ery the ongipes could be run at full speed Gaseumania. Mr. Ewhatever spend the ship was running at Legrand, Mr. Hernando, Mr. Ortiz, Mr. Fernando, Mr. therefore full power was always availnile
