DANGERS OF BIRTH CONTROL

MEDICAL OFFICER'S WARNINÙI,

Dr. J. Johnstone Jervis, medical officer of health for Leeds, in his annual report for 1992, cefees in some striking passages to the subject of birth control. Com menting upon the fall of the birth rate in Leeds "inn 21.5 to 19.8 per 1,000, be says: How people can, in these circum- stances, talk of birth control and the necessity for the reduction of the birth Irate passes comprehensim. To talk of the risks of overpopulation with Europe depleted by war, revolution, famine, nad disease, and ather Continents calling out for settlers to occupy their land and develop their industries is childish folly. This Malthasian myth of over-population, was exploded long age, so one thought, but it has been resurrected, and is again being made to do, service in this anti- |soril'eampaign to reduce the birth rate still further by artificial trans. No one objects to the restriction of the unfit. but to interfere with the birth of the fit and this seriously, is what is intended, -is to invite disaster. Let there no mistake about it, if the British Empire falls, it will not be for lack of money: ns se many sain to fear, but for luck of men, and reuse its sons and daughters have been influenced by the vapourings of a Tew seekers after notoriety, and have allowed selish interests to come between them and their duty And there is a Ta trath mural side to the question. men and women has to cover ap their sexual indiscretions and excessos is the surest way to introduce a state of anarchy tl bring ruin on the whofe sial sys- tem. Neither the natural nor the mural law, enn le louter with impunity sooner at revulsion, or later there must come with serious consequences to fenders. The State has also a duty in the matter.. namely, to ensure that every parent has an income to enable him to maintain him- self and his family in comfort and health. If it fails to do this, it fails in that on which most depends cur national health and welfare."

COLONEL MAKES A POINT DAFOING WITH SERVANT GIRLS.

Lint-Col. F. Hilder, M.P., for SE Essa, giving evidences at the Domestic Service Inquiry at the Ministry of Labour said the young men village in his constituency were apt to leave the servant girls severely alone at dances and socials. I make it a point to dance with them," said witness, add- ing that it was a feeling of loss of cial status which lay to a great extent at the. root of the problem.

He suggested as a remedy the recruit ing of an order-for-doustic service on lines similar to the Red Cross. It would be called the Gold Cross Order, and efficiency and good conduct would be-in- sitted upon for membership.
