Sir Westcott Ahell, Chief Ship Sur-

There

veyor, Lloyd's Register of Shipping, he lieved that is was the economic factor which would decide the issue of the dock accommodation for hig ships. were indications that the effect of settling the problem from that standpoint would restrict the length and draught of vessels to the depths available at the principal ports. The whole question ought to be investigated from the national standpoint.

Mr. F. E. Wentworth-Shields" (South- ton) said that those responsible for the development of the big liner ports had already been called upon to provide for the needs of the 50,000-ton ship, and would like to know whether the, limit was to be fixed at top or 19 tons, or what was likely to be the ultimate limit of development. He believed that, owing to the high cost of new works, harbour nuthorities would be compelled to fix a limit for the size of ships unless ship- owners were prepared to face higher dock charges. The only alternative. was for engineers to get together and devise cheaper, methods of constructing docks and quays.

Capt. F. Chambers (United States) said that the American Association of Port Authorities had just appointed gtittee, of which Dr. Brysson Can- ningham and he were members, to inquire what steps could be taken to bring about a greater degree of co-ordination between I port authorities in all countries und to determine what economies could be effect- ed by greater uniformity in dock design and equipment. He had been asked, he said, to bring this subject before all port authorities and to make a report to the meeting of the American Association..

Capt., F. R. Harrold, RS, dealt with the subject of collisions at sen in foggy weather. The accidents which occurred
