POISON IN SUBMARINES.

ARSENIC IN BATTERIES AND PLATES

1

At the conference on international Labour

organisation and industrial alth at the Royal Sanitary Institute last month, Dr. T. M. Legge, Medical Inspector of the House Office Factories.... Department, referred to the arcessity for investigating elusive and rare industrial diseases He mentioned that in 1915 cer tain British submarines had to return to part because the crows, were suffering from the characteristic symptoma of a certain poison gas, which could only arisa where Eeid or metal was contaminated with arsenic.

It was at first thought that the arsenio had been inserted by a German spy, but examination led to the discovery of one- fifth of 1 per cent. of arœuic in the plates and batteries of the submarine. Hua- dreds of thousands of pounds had to bea spent in replacing the batteries and platas A submarine might go to the Iottom from industrial" poison of that kind and no one be the wiser.

Professor F. L. Collis, of, the Welsh National School of Medicine, said car weather made us the nation, we were. IF we had the weather wo asked for, pro- bably we should degenerate into a third- class Power.
