The Messageries Maritimes" steamer will no longer put into Haiphong owing to keen competition with the P. & O and N.Y.K. lines, ns by putting in they are handicapped some three days on the Saigon-Shanghai run thereby, anys Le Courrier Salpommals In commenting ou the Messageries action, The only thing to be done is to furnish the Messageries with sufficient funds to enable them to augment their fleet sufficiently to guar- antee an efficient service. Ia several months the company will have three new vessels of the Kerguelen type on the Indo- China run. Haiphong would, no doubt, have its services maintained, have likod but under the circumstances the only thing to be done is to bow to the inevit

able.

OP CANADA'S" RECORD, The creation of a new, record for the trans-Pacific passage by the str. Empress of Canada on her last voyage was not allowed to pass without tangible notice being taken of the performance; At Vancouver just before starting on her returu voyage to China the vessel was presented with a handsome silver shield la recognition of her feat. The donors of the silver shield were the Vancouver Harbour Commission and the presenta tion was made by Col. G. H. Kirkpatrick, chairman of that body.
