ARE THEY SECOND RATE!

"A writer in the fanchester Guardiin deals with the subject of the literary worth of the Gilbert and Sulliyaa operax i The article may be of interest after the recent visit of a Gilbert and Sullivan company to the Far East:--

We have lately had in Manchester a sevison of the Gilbert and Sullivan operas, and I believe that it has been very suo cessful one. A few years ago their vogue seemed to falter & little, bat it has come again, and now, at any rate in the pro- vinces, it is in full blasty. And it is very pleasant that we should all unite in en. joyment and approbation of something. Gibert and Sullivan seems to appeal about equally to the highbrow philoso pher, to the village idiot, and to the con kiderable" body of us who come between, It is a good saying that one touch of nature make the whole world kin, but, it might be equally true to say the arme of happy artifice.

The Manchester season · has doubtless. sent many famities and ciréles of friends to the piano with the scores, and to hear young and old singing the favourite songs and roaring the choruses give a pleasant turn to the domesticities even if it does 1100 runk high as artistic expression, But if you take the book of words with you into a corner it is surprising to find how little of it is tolerably good though it had seemed so charming or jelly on the stage. Gilbert writes:

The threatened cloud has passed away. And fairly shines the dawning day; ". and this sects to do very well. Some. of his songs are capital, no doubt, buk. It they can hardly be called first-rate. another Sullivan were to arise I think he would find a dozen Gilberts to do as 'well or even a little better. As to the music that is another matter, and one on which I am quite unqualified to speak, Yet er I can sea that Sullivan has fine talent, and I should listen, with respect to anyoni who said that he is a man of genius. The two fitted together extra- ordinarily well, and one might begin to wonder whether Gilbert is a "ittle better ›ngd Sullivan a little worse thau a general impression might suggest. Can you du anything first-rate with very unequal yoke-fellows! But look at the ridiculou librettos of some famous operas! It is curious how the first-rate and the arcond- rate can exist side by side, can intertwine without any great harm. Is it that our perceptions are blunt, that we are cap- Fahle of concentration on one thing only at a time? Librettos have played a hum le part generally, but if there is any thing goed about we are singays ready to aesent contributory plausibilities, to cheer on the working compromisr, Presently,

Let us be glad of what we ga in an imperfect world. I should think Gilbert's verses are about as good as Macaulay's "Lays of Ancient Rome," which have given son pleasure ever since Matthew Arnold said they were pinchheck. But we want our 'appreciations to be fresh, not mechanical; and we want the per formances which enke to be fresh toq. There is a mchnical effort in every chorus" and, indeed, in every repetition. Que sometimes presumes to wonder whe ther Mr.. Lytton, for instance, lives a happy life. He must have an abundance of sure; he has adulation and cou videration, he contributes ofbetaally sto the gaiety of nations, but isn't he a slave? The most striking argument against capi tal punishment seems to me the impos sibility of any wositive community ac quiescing in a hangman, and I am not sure that we have any moral right to condran agreeable artist to perpetual slavery. They like it, perhaps. But they oughtn't to like it. Gilbert and Sullivan isn't good enough. I don't think that even Shakespeare is good enough. Sir Frank Benson has done and is doing a great work, but he has become 'ave

slave to the most illustrious master, but he bus aterad too many things; he hasn't stretched and pounded his talent suf-) ficiently.

1. Whatever Gilbert or Sullivan may be, you can't say that Shakespeare is second- rate. And yet in acting traditions, and presentations and paraphernalia you may live a good deal that is about tenth-rate.
