TOLSTOIS LOVE-LETTERS

A PRIG OF TWENTY-EIGHT.

The love letters of which the following are extracts were recently for the first time printed in English in Juhu o' Lon- dan's Weekly. They were written by Tolstoi in 1936 and 1837, when he was twenty-eight avars ok, to a young girl, Valeria Arseney. On his return frum fighting in the Crimea Tolstoi met Valeria, the daughter of one of his zeighbours, fell in love with her. Years afterwards the letters were given by Tolstoj to Paul Biryukey. Countess Taistoi forbade their publication until after her death, and they were included in the thinl edition of Birynkey's biography of Tolstoi published in Berlin in 1921.
