SPIRITS OF THE CENOTAPH.
FACES ON AN ARMISTICE DAY PHOTOGRAPH.
{"DAILY EXPRESS CORRESPONDENT] =
NEW YORK, April 7th. Tense scones occurred at Sir A. Conan Doyle's lecture last night at the Carnegie Hall when what Sir Arthar claims
the greatest spirit photographs ever taken were exhibited.
Are
These photographa were taken at the Cenotaph in Whitehall during the "Great Silonce
on Armistic Day. When they were thrown on the screen last night faces, in sach. o nass as to resemble a cloud bank, werg seen above the bared heads of the crowd.
These lacca, Sir A. Conan Doyle decisred, were the spirits.of dend soldiers which had returned to participate in that solemn ceremony.
WOMAN'S BRICK.
Women in the audience sobbed. ' One of ↑ them shrieked out, "Oh, don't you see them! The spirits! The spirits Many [others ahowed strong emotional excitement.
The Na York Times- states that thể pictures were so eerie, so weint, NO supernatural, that, they impressed even
scoffers."
It was explained that the pictures were taken by Mrs. Denn, an English medium, but that a group of mediums had been placed in the crowd to attract the psychic forces, and the caiacra was focusseit" just f above their leads.
The first picture,« photographic map- shot, showed in the foreground a small blur, which Sir Arthur said was the psychic forces gathering strength.
A second photograph taken with a two' minutes time exposure showed the fore ground almost obscured by " ecto-plasınatle” matter. The crowds heut in prayer were, however, visible in the background, whils cloud above was stadded with a great num ber of heads of men with grim, strained ex- pressions, some of them faint, some marked out distinctly. Only the heads appeared.

JUDGE'S OPINION.
Mr. Hereward Carrington, the psychic in- vestigator, who has been chosen one of the judges in the forthcoming Scientific American routest says that he cannot hold the Cenotaph pictures to be beyond the pos- sibility of deception.
*I had a sitting last summer with Mrs. Dear in London to make photographs." he said,
"I took every precaution, and examined everything. I had my own mark- ed plates, removed them from the camera, and devalaper them myself. There were no portraits on the plates. I got nothing but a lot of curious lights and marks.
I had another sitting with William Hope, and got a woman's face. I did not recognise it, but it returned again and again on different plates There were also the sune unintelligible lights and marks.
I am inclined to believe that some genuine asychic photographs have been obtained, mrely. Most of the photo- graphs taken have been shown to be frauds. Genuine cases are scattered among hundreds of fakes,""
GENUINE
Sir Arthur claims that the plates were developed under conditions which made frau impossible
There are widespread differences as to the genuineness of Sir A. Conan Doyle's Ceno- taph photographs. Sir Arthur promises to show some further spirit pictures even more startling than the Cenotaph photographs.
Believers who saw the Cenotaph-photo graphs say that the heads above the crowd might well be those of soldiers just pussing through death, because of their grùm, determined appearance as of men going through a new ordeal.
PRIMITIVE WOMAN.
are
Some of our moralista are fond of indíct- ing the age for its use of cosmetics. We are bidden regard the modern damsel with horror because she takes no shame to aid Nature with art. It was Jezebel, we reminded, who painted her face. But the very natiquity of the example should have warned the censors that the use of such adornments is not peculiar to the women of our time. Now we find one of his Majesty's inspectors of schools taking mins to point out to s conference of teachers that rouge is not the vicious product of an effets civilsa- tion, but an invention of mankind's

ladies of the Stone Age, he The argued, must have used rouge, for it haa been found preserved in the hollow of stag- horns, which plainly served as the dressing- case or make-up Lox of the period. Doubt- leas powder-puffs would also have been found bat for the susceptibility of the mate
