BELGIUM'S LARGEST LINER.

The Belgenland, now a palatial passenger liner of 27.000 tons, left Belfast last month after being extensively reconditioned and over hauled by Harland and Wolff, Lad., to take up her railings in the Red Star Line on the North Aantic route.

The ship was constructed during the war, and had to be fitted out temporarily as a cargo regel, owing to the great need which ther existed for tonnage. Five years of constant service as one of the world's largest carga-carriers bail not added to her beauty, nor yet impaired her usefulness.

Radiant in all the glory of her new ercation. the Belgentand left for Auisyrp, from which port the will ani on her maiden voyago as a passenger liner for New York. She in 697 ft. by 78 £. by 40 ft., and is the largest vessel under the Belgian flag. She has recommedation for rly 500 first, 1,000 second-class, and aver. 1.000 third-class passengers, and is beautifully furnished and decorated. She is propelled by triple screws with a low provsure turbira.

STEAM NAVIGATION TO THE EAST INDIES.

เท

The Observer reproduced last month from its flr of the paper a hundred sears ago the following interesting an- nouncement:-

CAPTAIN. JOHNSTON'S PLAN For Establishing, by Means of Steam Navigation, a Communication with Cal- cutts and the East ladies Generally,

ths Mediterranean, Isthmus of Suez, and the Red Sen: The Voyage Out and Home to be Completed Within 120 Days,

I deem it unnecessary to dwell upon the efficiency of stram vessels to navigate upon the open seas, and to counter severe gales, even with greater advantages than those provided only with masts and sails. Persons who entertain doubts on this point will be beat answered by a perusal of the different reports of the Committees of the House of Commons. It would be superfluous also to attempt to demon- strate that which is in itself evident-I [mean the "véry great advantage that would derive to merchants individually and to the public generally by the means of speedy communication with our

Asiatic Dominion".

To perform the contemplated service, is will be necessary to have at leasti three, and perhaps four vessels on each side of the lathrius. They should be off 400 tons of the strongest build, and of 100 horsepower, with latteen sails or lug foresail, and schooner-rigged abaft.... AT HOTELS
