# THE

PRESENTATION AT SWATOW TO CAPT. TURNBULL, OF THE SHANSI."

An interesting ceremony took place at Swatow on, April 21st, when Capt. R. Turnbull, of the China Nagivation Co., was presented by Mr. H. King, H.B.M.'é Consul. on behalf of the B.O.T., with a handsamely engraved silver cup in comme- moration of his services in rescuing a sumber of the passengers and crew of the na Hungmoh of Singapore, which was wrecked on the Boat Rocks, off the Lomock Island in March, 1921.

The NY.K 1.5, Orka Maru (Calcutta line) left Calcutta for Hengkong rid Rangoon on April 2nd, and is expecter here on May 6th.

Mr. King, in the presence of representL. tiveg of the foreign community and several of Capt

Turnbull's follow shipmasters, spoke of Capt. Turubull's notion and of the appreciation it had caused at home when the facts were brought to the notice of the B.O.T. He also commended the skill of Capt. Turnbull in doing so much! in the heavy weather prevailing at the time of the wnck with the mentia at his disposal,

The cup was then presented,

Capt. Turnbull, in replying, said:-I thank you very much for making me this presentation, and I. trust that through you Mr. King my grateful thanks will each the proper quarter at home. And I would like my many friends in Swatow to know how much appreciate their efforts in ing the name of the ne Thann before the proper authorities in England. As Master of the Shani I maturally feel very proud of this tangible form of recognition, which, with Lloyd's medal, will

call to mind the end fate of the Hangmoh. Of course that is already a thing of the past, remembered only perhaps by those intimately connected with it, but there is no doubt that the outstanding feature was the gallant work dene by H.M.8, Carlisle. At the same time the cup shews that the small efforts! of the Merchant Service have not book! overlooked, and that is extremely, gratify- ing to us. raight add that, without the loyal operation of the officers, both dock and engine-room, our efforts would have been in vain. Before cinsing I just wish. to repeat my thanks to you all, and to say once more how much I appreciate all that. has been done to secure for me this hand- come token,

There having any knowledge of the goa will readily appreciate the difficultice under which Capt. Turnbull and his office laboured, Taking into considera- tion the heavy ses running at the time and the dangerous kuality, that they were able to recoge so many proves the truth of
