The occasion was a lecture by Professor Green before a joint meeting of the Society of Dyers and Colourists and the Society of the Chemical Industry;"

The purpose of the lecture and demon- stration, which are of far-reaching import ance to the British dye-stuffs industry, was to show how mixture of silk and cotton may be dyed two colours in a single dye- bath at the one operation.

The process is an entirely new one, and the range of the colours is wide.

The authors stated that their discovery of the ionamines in the research inborn tories of the British Dyestutis Corpora tion provided a means of readily dyeing acetate silk in any depth of shada, a pro- cess which had hitherto, prosented difficul- ties owing to this Ebre's want of affinity for acidic and direct dyestuffs.

After a discussion of the nature of the physical problem presented in the dyeing of acetate alk, an account was given of the chemical constitution of the new dyestuffs and of the steps which had led to their discovery

The Somali women are far more in telligent, and, as a whole better-looking. than those of any of the other tribes in British East Africa, with the exception of the Arabs, who have made that country their home, writes & Jubaland correspondent of the Morning ca They are usually and slender, having fine features, with straight noses and thin line, and a darkish- brown and plexion. Their hair is longer than any of the Bantu women's

The young girls have their heads bare, sometimes hind ing a filet round their foreheads, but as soon as they are married they adopt a silk head-oovering, called a "hagog." They wear clothes woven along the coast of Benadir, bright coloured and usually orange red, or crimson. These cloths are wrapped round them in one piece, somewhat after the fashion of an Indian woman's "saree," leaving the right arm free, and folder round the waist. They are very graceful in their movements, and walk with a free swing, almost outing to a swagger, not found in other native women in that part

Some of the Somali customs in regard to marriage differ considerably from those of the surrounding tribes.
