IMPORTANT DISCOVERY.

TWO COLOURS AT SINGLE OPERATION.

Jurapers and stockings of various and during jazz hues, and skeins of brightly. coluared silk, gave the demonstration bench of the chamint lenture theatre as the Man- chester University a somewhat bright appearance.

The usual chemical appliances were for the time being completely in the shade.

Behind the bench bearing this interest. ing assortment "were Professor Arthur G. Green, who is famous throughout the world for his researches and discoveries in gyn thetic dyes, and Mr. Kenneth H. Saunders. These two gentlemen are the discoverers of a new class of dyestuffs known as iona-

mines.

The occasion was a lecture by Professor Green before a joint meeting of the Society of Dyers and Colourists and the Society of the Chemical Industry;"

The purpose of the lecture and demon- stration, which are of far-reaching import ance to the British dye-stuffs industry, was to show how mixture of silk and cotton may be dyed two colours in a single dye- bath at the one operation.

The process is an entirely new one, and the range of the colours is wide.

The authors stated that their discovery of the ionamines in the research inborn tories of the British Dyestutis Corpora tion provided a means of readily dyeing acetate silk in any depth of shada, a pro- cess which had hitherto, prosented difficul- ties owing to this Ebre's want of affinity for acidic and direct dyestuffs.

"The colours produced-yellow to such

and red--could be further

orange,

shades astbrowna, rede, violets, blues, and blacks by the operations of diazotimation and development which are well known in cotton dyeing.

After a discussion of the nature of the physical problem presented in the dyeing of acetate alk, an account was given of the chemical constitution of the new dyestuffs and of the steps which had led to their discovery

It was pointed out that the dyestuffs which could be produced were characterised by great fastness to washing and wear." In al cases their resistance to light wa

cient;

in some cases it was remarkably good. The now class of dyestuffs appeared to open great possibilities in the dyeing of mixed materials compost and linen, or of acetate. silk and cotton, aastate acetate silk and viscose silk; for, by using dyebath containing a mixture of an ionn mirde with a suitable direct cotton dye, each fibre would select its appropriate dye-stuf

By this means either solid shades or two-colour effects might be produced as desire...

THE SOMALIS.

MARRIAGE CUSTOMS AND DOWRY QUESTIONS.

The Somali women are far more in telligent, and, as a whole better-looking. than those of any of the other tribes in British East Africa, with the exception of the Arabs, who have made that country their home, writes & Jubaland correspondent of the Morning ca They are usually and slender, having fine features, with straight noses and thin line, and a darkish- brown and plexion. Their hair is longer than any of the Bantu women's

hair, often reaching to be low their shoulders. The young girls have their heads bare, sometimes hind ing a filet round their foreheads, but as soon as they are married they adopt a silk head-oovering, called a "hagog." They wear clothes woven along the coast of Benadir, bright coloured and usually orange red, or crimson. These cloths are wrapped round them in one piece, somewhat after the fashion of an Indian woman's "saree," leaving the right arm free, and folder round the waist. They are very graceful in their movements, and walk with a free swing, almost outing to a swagger, not found in other native women in that part

art of the world.

Some of the Somali customs in regard to marriage differ considerably from those of the surrounding tribes. When a man wishes to marry any particular young girl he visits the father in order to open negotiations. On his entry into the lat ho is bidden to sit down, and a dish of bot "buni" is brought and shared between the two men.

**Bani" consists of coffee beans, in parchment, which are roasted over the fire in fat, and brought steaming hus

to the guests. He pours some of

the melted fat, or batter, over his hands and ng Bismillah." smears his face, muttering" His bost does the same, and then ench man picks out some of the hot roasted berries and cats them, spitting out the dry husk The women of the house bring little caps full of sweetened milk in which the remaining berries are placed; and, the concoction is enten and

drunk by both men. It is not until after this care many that the guest broaches the subinct of his call, and after a great deal of haggling, the number of cattle, camels, or dollars he will have to give his future father-in-law is decided upon.

87-YEAR-OLD LADY IN U.S.A, SENATE

The special Session of Congress called by President Harding, primarily to consider the Bhip Babsidy Bill, opened at Washington on November 20th. There was a mild sensation when Mr. Felton, aged 87, took her seat in the Senate, although ber bonorary appointment as SUCCEESOT to the Iste Senator Watson had been invalidated by the election of a successor on November 7th. The aged lady sat with her credentials in her lap, and announced that if they were not honoured she would, make a speech from the floor of the House... This declaration, was received with repeated cheers in the gallery, and Mrs. Foltonthrew kissen fo friends there.", The, settlement of this knotty legal problem was deferred by the quick adjournment of the Senate out of respect for the late Benator Watson Sage leaders are inclined to make a precedent of the cane, and allow Mrs. Felton Fto be present and eit for one day-Beuter,
