EARL BEATTY ON TIS

SECURITY AT SEA VITAL TO

EMPIRE

A very cordial welcome was extended to Earl Beatty on October 18th when he visited Leed to receive the freedom of the city "End the honorary degree of Doctor of Law from the university. Tha double ceremony took place in the Majestio cinema. The freedom was con ferred by the Lord. Mayor (Mr. William Hodgson) and the university degree by Sir William Sadler, Vice Chancellor of the university, in "grateful recognition of ilustrious servics to the nation and her Allies in the war.”. $

In aakaowledging the honour Eart Beatty said they must not forges the lessons of history which were borne in upon them more forcibly than ever during the late war. The chief of them was that' socarity at sea was vital to the Empire.

that "We hear it stated," he went on, the development of aerial warfare, will rob us of some of the main advantages of our insular "position, that it will lessan the need for Naval defence. A study of all the problems involved will indicata how utterly fallacious is such a doctrine as this. Surely to study is necessary to Appreciate the fact that the British Empire consista of something more than the British Isles. The strength of this widespread Empire lies in its physical as

well 18 its moral unity, and its physical unity is and mast always be maintained by the sea. We must not to below the minimum id down at the Washington Conference. We could hos rely upon forbearance of our friends for our continued existence as a great world power."

Mr. Albert Bliss, were absent from the TEK - CHINA SPEĢIE BANK, LTD. meeting aving to illpens, The former a suffering from a nervous breakdown. The Official Receiver said that Bir James stated that the business was just solvent when he entered it, but no balance-sheet was pre- pared, while the Profit and Loss count appeared in the private ledger. An a count was submitted to the War Office in 1921 but was not sent to the Official Re ceiver and to the debtors. He stated that many temporary members of the staff, dur ing the war were incompetent. Cheques were honoured which should not have been honoured and customers were allowed to overdraw without authority. A large number of temporary customers withdrew their accounts on demobilisation. This was a beary drain on the resources of the Bank.
