LINCOLN'S INN.

500TH ANNIVERSARY.

A great legal bouquet is being projected for the early autuma to mark the 500th andiversary of the establishment of the famous Lincoln's Inn, home of the equity. I lawyer, on its present site,

As most people with evon limited knowledge of the history of Loudon know, the neighbourhood of Lincoln's Inn was in ancient days a wide open space, the haunt of beggars and idle persons, where it was not always safe for law-abiding persons to go alone. Many duels were fought there, and, as an inscribed tablet let into the ground near the bandstand testifies, executions sometimes took place at the semi-rural spot. The Honourable Society of Lincoln's ton did not have their recognised abode there till 1422. The small group of Lawyers who formed the macletin of the society | originally dwelt at Thavy's Inn, Shoa-inué, but afterwards the larger proportion oc cupied. Furnival's Inn, Holborn. By the þeir 1492 some again had moved from Furnival's fan to the Palace of the Bishops) of Chichester in Chancery-lane, although Thary's Inn and Furnival's. Inu still re mained dependencies, this became the, ronl' home of the moiety, and under the name of Lincoln's Ton las remained its hou ever since: The two smaller inns have long since disappeared.

' Those who traverse Chancery-lune will recognise one of the most interesting. features of the Inn, though not its oldest- the brick gatehouse, opened in 1520-1, and substituting a gate which originally gave access to the lane, London possesBEA but three other similar gate-houses, those of St. James's Palace, Lambeth Palace, and St. John's, Clerkenwell. On its front is tablet, now very much de- cayed, composel of three panels, one showing the arms of Henry VIII. another the arin4 of Henry de Lacy, Earl of Lincoln, and the third the arms of Sir Thomas Lovell, a member of the society with acknowledged repute an a builder, who is said to have given advice upon the erection of the gatehouse. The guard-room still exists just within the masive, írod-studded gale, on the south side.

MY OLDEST BUILDING.

Actually the oldest building in the Inn is the Old Hall, which in 1489 replaced the Bishop's Hall. Save some masonry in on ut the walls, carefully prescryed" bebind a plate-glass screen, Ettle now remains of the original structure. But a lively im- agination can easily conjure up its ancient life us the place where the members ate, studied, lemnly. danced, at great feaste, and performed a masque ou an historic visit of Charles II. in 1662, a few years before the cheery monarch and some princes and nobles were admitted into the society. The Hill is now used as a lecture- room, and very casionally as a law court. The block knows a Old Buildings, just within the gatehouse, are urvivors of a general rebuilding which began in 1524 and Continued for nearly a century. "Here resided John Thurloe, Cromwell's secretary. and the famous "Thurloe State papers," which, so mysteriously disappeared, are said to have been discovered in a false ceiling in,the chambers he occupied, in the reign of William III. Londoners very well know the appearance of the Chapel, designed and built by Inigo Jones, 1620-23, but since twice restored; and of the Hall and Li. trary adjoining, in the collegiate style of ar chitecture, the due rich in frescoes, pictures, and emblazoned panelling, the other the receptacle of a priceless collection of books and containing a statute of Erskine, the proprietary right to which by the benchers occasioned much dispute in recent years. Nor do they need to be toll of the beautiful, reposeful gardens, pow, pafor fonately, by the extension of the buildings, much reduced from their original extent.

WAR TRAGEDY RECALLED.

Names, great and bistoric, are associated. with Lincoln's Inn in very considerablu sumber. Its quaint environment, as well as its venerable associations, should give to the projected festival a character quite novel and historic
