THE ART OF ABUSE.
POSSIBILITIES OF ENGLISH.
." It woema a great pity that our politics have not generally been very violent con- widering what possibilities thera are in the language. Rascals, acumps, scoundrels, thieves! These are vaty beautiful and noble words. In our public life we have a wide und sppropriate feld" for their use, |-but" we allow these gems of English to |lo aside, neglected. I commend to some of our scholarly committees the question of reviving and fostering the beautiful art of English abuse.
This is a characteristic extract from a Flecture on William Cobbett, the great de- magogue of a century ago, delivered by Mr. G. K. Chesterton at the Buyal Society of Literature on April 28th. The interest of Cobbett," the lecturer said, lios in bis be- ing interesting. This is not so tantological aa it sounds. He belongs to a class of people especially characteristic of the English tradition-people who cannot be classifed very easily into any school, or function, or profession of moral or religious work. Eng- land has produced a type in the very first rank of intelligence and power who are each of the unique and indescribable... Any title assigned to them" falls short of their stature. We cannot call Dr. Johnson apoot because of his few good lines. It would be equally absurd to call him an essayist. For soms absurd reason he is frequently described as the grent lexico- grapher. Dr. Johnson is Dr. Johnson, and any function we describe him by is in- sufficient. There is no office that does not diminish him." Ou Carlyle Mr. Chesterton's, verdict was "As 'a' pessimist Carlyle was an old humbug:; as a prophet of woe, as a man denouncing and defying things and standing up against the world be was an old humbug; as an optimist he was a very interesting old gentiaminn, and as a poet he was great..
THE WRONG BRIDE, "
EXTRAORDINARY DECEPTION.
A Hungarian woman's ruse whereby she was enabled to marry her sister' fancé is just now the all absorbing, topic in Budapest society. A major in the Hargarian army, passionately in love with and engaged to the youngest of three siniers, was himself loved withous his knowledge by the second sister..
On the morning of the wedding the latter, agiri of deminating personality, per suaded the legitimate fanere to stay at hom while she went to the church to be married. The fact that the bride wore. a thick vell prevented the discovery of the deeption, and only when the 'couple returned to the hotel for the reception. did the major discover he had married the wrong woman. He refused to accept as excuse her plea that her passionate love had driven ber to impersonating her eister, and after the wedding party had dispersed iu consternation he hastened to bis lawyer and instructed him to file a divores petition.
The fact that the 'Catholic Church of which both parties are members, die- countenancES divorce complicates, the
situation.
"GOLF MANIAC" SUED. WIFE'S CHARGE OF NEGLECT.
Mrs. Howard E. Lee, the wife of a prominent business man of Detroit, is kaing her husband for divorce on the ground that he has become, a “golf Imaniac."
Mrs. Lee declares that her husband ne- glected herself and their three children and his business in order to indulge his passion. for the game. The distress of mind she has suffered through this neglect amounts, she contends, to legal cruelty.
The respondent denies his wife's charges of neglect. He admits that he plays a great deal of golf, but says that the game is a business asset," owing to the “valuable acquaintanceships he is able to make on the links."
PEOPLE WHO DYE THEIR HAIR.
LADY'S SUCCESSFUL CLAIM.
A lady has been awarded 260 damages by the King's Bench against a West End hair dresser for damage by application of a hair dye. An expert witness; who said he ged more bair than anyone in the world, interviewed subsequently, said 18,000 inches yearly visited his premises. They mostly came three or four times yearly to renew the dye, whereas male customers, who nam- bered 16 to overy 100,women, had to attend "monthly. The men were almost wholly business managers antenas tą disguise their age, whereas the women wished to look beautiful as well as young. Some women of 80 persisted in wearing tinted hair. The practice of dyeing was more widespread than ever. There were not many grey haired ladies nowadays, because hair,"could be dyed most skilfully.
