The expedition which sails this time for the North Pole will not be like those which have proveded it, according to its leader.
Its vision will not be confined to a few milos ca either sids Nf the ship, but from the air it will be able to take in at a glance objecta 200 miles away.
it will not be cut off for years from touch with the outside world, leaving friends and relatives to wonder if the Northland had smashed in its icy fist the hardy al- venturers who encroached on its fastnesses. Instead, it will talk by radio Tour times a day with Washington, and when it returns in three or Ere years, it will know what the civilized-world has been doing during its absence.
It will not have spent years charting merely a narrow strip, but with the aid of aviation, wil be able to chart. 1,000,000 aquare miles, sketching the currents of the air as well as those of the au For centuries scientists have believed that cur- rents of the North Pole here been reapott- sible for climatic phenomena in the part of the world in which civilized. man lives, and. Amundsen hopes to accomplish with his aeroplanes la ́a five years" voyage what would take forty years, millions of dollars and many lives if only a ship and lög siels were employed. „"
ALL METAL ARROPLANE,
It is upon bis aeroplanes, two in number, that Amundsen pios his chief hopes and it was upon one of them that he focussed his attention as soon as he stepped ashore to-day. Hardly had he lauded than be hustened to conference with John M: Larsen, 1, governor of the Aeronautical Chamber of Commerce of London. After luncheon came the announcement that the larger of the two Aeroplanes selected by the explorer would be the all-metal Larsen monoplane; which, on December 29th, flying over Mineola, R.1. in zero weather, established the world's record for continuous flying of 2ti iviars, 19 diinutes and 35 seconds.
The aeroplane, Captain Amundsen er- plained, was being supplied by Mr. Larsen at his own expense and the contribution which the aeroplane manufacturer "woull make to the expolition would represent about $40,000.
Amundsen is confident that the mono-" plane, the eyes of his vessel, Maude, will be able to do its work well, permitting great sallies to either side of the vessel and sending warnings of ice Seld- and inngerous currents that should be avoided.
The aeroplane has already tried its wings in a temperature of 48 degrees below zero. Laster Mr. Larsen made u 6,000 mile round trip in her from New York to the Arctic circle, by way of Edmonton, Alberta. and the Peace River and reported that the machine acted as well as if she were being flown in the blamy airs of Florida. Captain Amundsen said to-day that he expected seldom to encounter a temperature lower than that in which the aeroplane bas already been tested.
ALSO A BRITISH ROJUT. Besides the monoplans, Captain Amund- sen will take an Arro scout plane, a smaller British machine, which will be used only within the vicinity of the Maude, The monoplane with a cabin in which 11 persons have been carried, will be self-supporting. She is so equipped that she can carry large stocks of full and provisions, and to her: can be adjusted skis, wheels or pontoons,"" so that she can land on any surface. Sho has been thoroughly renovated. With her aid, Captain Amundsen believes he cau chart a 200 mile wide course across the top of the earth.

After this conference with Mrs Larsen, Captain Amundsen and Lieutenant Oscar. Omdel, of the Norwegian Air Force, who arrived today with the explorer, took up the question of testing the mmoplane at Central Park. Oudel, who will pilet the machine, is an expert mechanic and as he will have to look after the machine himself, he plans to begin immediately familiarizing himself with it."
The explorer plans to leave Washington in about a week for conferences there. with government officials and scientific authorities and then will proceed to Seattle, where the Afaude is to be drydocked on April 5th.
THE PERSONNEL.
>
One of the objects of Captain Amundson's visit to Washington is to complete arrango- menta för wireless relays.
His radio plan at present consists of flashing reports from the aeroplane to the mother ship, which is equipped with trans- mitting apparatus of 2,000 miles radius. The ship will then communicate with Nome, Alaska, and Nome will reply to the powerful station at St. Paul on the Behring Sea. St. Paul will send the messages direct to Washington.
Captain Amundsen said he would take 10 men when, he sets out for Nome to drift tu Spitzbergen, with food sufficient for seven years. Because of the ice and dan gerous currents in the North Polar Basin, the explorer believes the only investigation possible there will be from the air-Beater.
