THE POPPIES OF FLANDERS. MILLIONS SOLD FOR 'LORD HAIG'S FUND.

The decision to hold "Poppy Day" Hongkong to Glap Hock, overcast with drizzle was made only six weeks previously and the appearance of the millions of scarlet flowers in every part of the country an the 11th November was secured only by the most careful organisation and un- remitting labour. The poppies were made in France and at home. The first three millions were manufactured across the ChannelThen, from the distributing centres that had been set up all over Great Britain-the-requisitions for sup plies that began to come to hand at head- quarters showed that that number of flowers would be far too small. Eventually rather more than 8,000,000 were made, and even with that number the country centres did not receive all they could have disin posed of.

As it was, the central organisation in St. James's-square bad disposed of their whole stock before ten o'clock in the morning and were busy trying to obtain substitutes. Before the close of the day Captain Willcox and his staff were glad to obtain anything in the artificial flower line that suggested a poppy red. Actually thousands of the pictured poppies, on the cards, issued to official sellers, were sold to those who "could not get the others.

EARL HALO HELD UP."''

After leaving the Cenotaph in their car on their way to the headquarters of the British Legion, Field-Marshal Ea Haig and Countess Haig were stopped by woman seller. The car had a large bunch of Flanders poppies on the bonnet, and the enterprising young women begged that she might have the flowers because. all her stock-and it had been a big one -was gone. Lady Haig at once had them handed over, and those who wit- nessed the incident almort engaged in ́a

From every quarter cama complaints that not nearly enough poppies was avails able. This was no fault of the Britished Legion; they got them by millions in excess, as they thought, of all likely re- quirements, and still more millions were demanded. The only promise that can be made is that the fault will be rectified! next year.

The City was especially urgent. supply was sufficient, and motor-cars.on their way to replenish the stock of the street sellers were surrounded, and any thing from a £1 note to £5 was offered for one of the shilling poppies.

In the busier West London streeta, string of bayers waited their turn. Usually on flag days it is the passer-by, who.com- plains of the insistence of the insistence of the flag seller. But the positions on Armistice Day were reversed. The sellers were besieged, having money thrust upon them as quickly as they could take it.
