EDINBURGH, November and. It is not often that the ardour of scien- tific research carries the same explorer both towards the Furthest North and the Furthest South, and enables him to write his name in the records of Arotic and Antarctic discovery. Bruce, who has just died in Edinburgh, and who during near 17 30 years devoted himself with enthu disam and salf-sacrifice to the task of pushing the limits of human know ledge into the blank spaces surrounding the opposite Poles of the earth, and achieved results the value of which can- not be megaured merely by the high parallels of latitude reached or by the extent of the now lands discovered There was nothing spectacular, or that mada direct appeal to the popular im- agination, in Bruce's plans, although in both spheres of his operations against the massed forces of the ice he did work which placed him, in the front rank as a voyager and discoverer in high lati tudes.
