·DR. W. S. BRUCE. AROTTO AND ANTARCTIC EXPLORER.
[FROM OUR OWN. CORRESPONDENT.]
EDINBURGH, November and. It is not often that the ardour of scien- tific research carries the same explorer both towards the Furthest North and the Furthest South, and enables him to write his name in the records of Arotic and Antarctic discovery. This was the Tory tune of Dr. W. S. Bruce, who has just died in Edinburgh, and who during near 17 30 years devoted himself with enthu disam and salf-sacrifice to the task of pushing the limits of human know ledge into the blank spaces surrounding the opposite Poles of the earth, and achieved results the value of which can- not be megaured merely by the high parallels of latitude reached or by the extent of the now lands discovered There was nothing spectacular, or that mada direct appeal to the popular im- agination, in Bruce's plans, although in both spheres of his operations against the massed forces of the ice he did work which placed him, in the front rank as a voyager and discoverer in high lati tudes. His ambition and endeavour were always to make sure of the ground cap. tured, to prepare the way for further advances, and, instead of merely extend. ing the bounds of geographical knowledge

One subject naturally has a great attraction for Mr. Banar Law, the industrial-stagnation; be baa long and wide experience of the home and foreign markets; and you may expect to hear that he has submitted certain pro- posals to his old colleagues, whether ho advocates them in public himself or net.
