Owing to the parting of the check chains at Bristol, during the launching recently of the British India S.N. Co.' motor prasengos steamer Dumro, for service on the African coast, the vessel dashed down the ways and created much damage in the harbour. The spectators at the works hurriedly fled.
A message from Salina Cruz dated October 13th says: The s.. New Chino, of Peking, when entering inner harbour, bumped into the entrance wall of the presage leading to the inner harbour and also struck one of the lift bridge sections while passing through. The vessel, which had some plates indented and ons holed, has been surveyed and repaired.

Aside from the patriotic aspect lent by the new pathe and its peculiar suitability when used for a vessel running in con, junction with the new big Empress of Canada, as representing the two great Commonwealths within the British Em-
new steamer tends to prevent confusion in the public mind with well-known but defunct units of the Company's old feet.
Both the Empress of Canada 22,000 tons register and the Empress of Australia 19,300 tona register, are expected to join the Empress of Russia and Empress of Asia, cach 18,850 tons register, in April- May of the coming year, thus establish ing practically a fortnightly service of large fast Empresses on the Vancouver. Hongkong berth. Schedule of sailings will be announced by the Company as quickly as possible.
Both the Empress of Canada and Em press of Australia have been specially built and carefully designed for the car- riage of passengers and with a single eye to meet the requirements of a highly dis- criminating clientele.
The Empress of Russia and Empres of Asia have, hitherto, been the largest, fastest and most luxurious passenger Vessels on the Pacifio Ocean. The new steamers will need to be ships in excelsis "to dim their record.
