DRAMATIC SURGERY,

MARVELS OF THE WAR.

SOCIETY OF ST. GEORGE.

FOUNDER -HONOURED.

An address of special interest was The Royal Society of St. George, meet delivered at the, opening of the eighty-ing at the Mansion House, London, on October 12th, made a presentation to Mr. seventh session of the Middlesex Hospital Howard Buff, the founder and hon, secre School on October 4th by Mr. G. Gorden tary of the society. Taylor, who took as his subject "The Dramatic Side of Surgery."

Admiral the Hoo, Sir Edmund Fre mantle, acting hon. treasurer of the society, said they had thought it their duty, after the twenty-seven years in which Mr. Howard Buff had worked 10 cobly and so disinterestedly for the benefit of his country, carrying the society, which he founded in 1984, into every corner of: the world, to ask him to accept some testi- monial to show how thoroughly his scr vices, were appreciated.

The gift took the form of an illuminated address on vellum, bearing at the top reproduction of the painting of Bt. George and the Dragon, by the late Sir William Richmond, RA. was as follows:-

The address.

Mr. Gordon Taylor said dramatic and spectacular qurgery might be, and often was, the reault of brilliant and exquisite, achievement. It might indicate the con- quest of difculties unexpected, or these, against which no, deinite provision had been made. Every surgeon probably derived some pleasure from the successful removal of a large tumour; and the enumeration of the weight and linear dimensions of their trophies denoted a spirit of rivalry and competition on the part of the operators for a place on the list, arranged not in the order of the

Some patients might be said to have many lives. An Australian lieutenant was gassed in the begining of June, 1918; on July 4th on the way to the trenches, be was wounded in the abdomen by a frag ment of shell. By a lucky chance he was near an advance dressing station, where he was speedily transferred to his (Mr. Gordon Taylor's) casualty hospital and had to be prematurely sent down to a base. Here he was sorely tempted to eat of forbidden food and fruit at the bands of the V.AD.'s 'and' nurses, but he courageously braved the unpopularity which he incurred by turning a deaf ear to their blandishments.

On his way across the Channel he" was torpedoed in the hospital ship Warildo and dragged out of the water by a rope round his waist: He spent two hours in a boat in soaking pyjamas, and subsequently six hours on the deck of a destroyer. Yet he made a complete recovery, and now found Paris a pleasant spot in which to sojourn as a dealer in fruit.

One of the most romantic stories in surgery was Sir John Bland Sutton's operation on a youth who shot himself because the girl he loved did not accept his love story which ended happily, because the girl subsequently married the boy. Mr. Gordon Taylor then gave a number of stories of transfusion of blood and the difficulty sometimes encountered, even with the offer of a money reward, in getting blood for the purpose. In que case, for a woman in hospital, transfusion of blood was urgently necessary, but her. husband refused to donate. (Laughter.) He (Mr. Gordon Taylor) sent his lady secretary in a taxi cab to a labour bureau, the police-station, etc., but without auc

men,

A resolution was carried unanimously reaffirming the society's opinion that the teaching of the principles of patriotimm should be included in the curricula of our schools of all grades.
