1HE NEW

WOMAN.

ESSENTIAL EYE.

[DY BEATRICH KHAN SEYMOUR, AUTHOR OF "INVISIBLE TIDE" AND "INTRUSION.")

Upon the modern woman there has descended of late a veritable avalanche of criticism, and though some of it un- doubtedly hails from her older-fashionel sister, the bulk of it comes, as it always has come, from men. In so far, too, as the matron of to-day has moulded her life with some regard to masculine pre- judice, her criticism may, for the pur poses of this article, be regarded as mos- culine. From the avalanche emerges the fact that the modern woman can do nothing right; she is a terrible problem before which her critics sit impotently down and wring heir hands

den.

Nevertheless, I am extremely doubilai whether it is the modern-or new-woman against whom these charges are really made. As far as our mothers and grand- mothers are concerned, there was certainly never a time when they did not reprove their daughters with that tiresome

is (and always has been) aimed at woman-at that essential Eve (whether it be in the person of mother ör sister") against whom St. Augustine warned the young man who came com- plaining that he wished to become a monk, and was being held back by his mother Woman, in short, has been madd the scapegoat, and one is permitted to wonder, perhaps, what man would have done without her. He has declared. vaingloriously, that a woman's standards are inferior to his own ("The woman of highest standard is immeasurably beneath the man of lowest standard," says one cheerful gentleman); her virtue. haral Iways been suspect, her bonour decisred. negligible. This is essentially, the criti- cism to be expected in a world which assumes that, apart from men, women have no live-nt all, for in a scheme of things where women must be for ever competing for men's favours it is not to be expected that women would show to advantage. Such a condition of things must inevitably develop the worst femi- nine qualities, as it would develop those of the male if positions could be reversed. But the queer thing is that the spirit of this sort of criticista should have sur. vived till to-day, for surely the distine- tive thing about the "new woman is that the no longer believes that she has no life of her own. It is this fact chiefly which gives her a new outlook upon the world Yat, even so, the problem is not quite so simple as it looks, for to-day no more than at any other time is it possible to talk of women as though they were all made to one pattern, all true to type. But the problem can certainly be simpli fed by dividing the modern woman into

two classes: ———

1. The woman who has really a "new"

outlook upon life; and

2.-The woman who has not.
