There has been a kind of revolt against Gruyere... the amount of black that is being worn. No woman is without at least one black dress these days, and she does it on overy possible occasion because she knows that it has so much to recommend it that her other frocks have bat; it is the arme of alegance, it rounds off any corpa lent lines of her figure that happen to bo there and threaten to obtrude them- solves, and it's economies because it does away with washing or dry-cleaning bills, a big item, to be considered by women whose means are not unlimited. Therefore, it is not to be wondered at that black, for the moment, reigns sup rume, adif that the majority of Parisien- nes go about the world in a black garb, be it morning, afternoon or evening- Fortunately, the season is providing a colour scheme with trees in all the glory of their light green verdure and Bowers that are a riotous blaze for the eye; otherwise it would be a very sombre Paris, indeed, greeting the hordes of strangers that flock to ber gates.

The colour scheme provided by Nature is aided by one just lately devised by designers, which is no less than that of bringing into fashion the wairing of antique Spanish and Oriental shawls. This is taking on every day, and the number of Parisiennes going about swathed in the stately folds of some old shawl is increasing considerably as is, needless to say, the price of such shawis. Black and white ones are worn when none others are obtainable, but, in order to provide a brilliant foif for so much black, it is the shawl that is a mad riot of colour embroidered on by means of a lavish design of flowers which is the One with a long sought-after article. fringe is also a desirable quality. T this craze continues, it will surely estab lish a shawl industry in France. As it is not possible to obtain shawls quick enough from China or Japan or in suf- fioient quantities from Spain, the one alternative was to manufacture them in France, whilst waiting for boats and trains to bring them from other coun- tries, and the result has been to act many Tooms in action and provide work for many fingers clever enough to man- pulate silk threads and intricate pat terns, and to launch on the market shawls as varied and beautiful na any that ever grew into being in Old Spain or in far-away Oriental lands. The price, of course, is prohibitive for the majority of people. The stock of the antique dealers hus been exhausted, and any of the hxury shops in the Rue de la Paix. that possess these articles will only let them go at a high figure. In Liberty's, for example, their more elaborate shawls are selling for as much as 3,000 franca, and even the ones that are less embroider- ed and show a shorter fringe are not) marked much below 1,500 francs.

Another existant note of colour is that introduced by the blouses at present in vogue. No colour is too bright for a material to be, and as scheme of em- broidery or design is "considered too showy. Alongside so much black and grey, (the latter colour being a apparently the only one permitted for tailor-made, wear), the modern blouse rather suggests a Salon d'Automne picture in a mid- Victorina drawing-room Eyes that have become accustomed to seeing droves of women wearing painfully plain black dresses or grey tailored suits devoid of all trimming may be pardoned for being Homewhat startled at the sight of a bright orange or vermilion blouse, one in a more neutral shade emboidered with a design that looks like a Sussex garden ia full Spring bloom, or else one whose collection of stripes and heiroglyphics would put to shame the finest effort at camouflage decoration ever produced by war artists.
