An examination through glasses showed that about 350 persons were on board the wreck, over which heavy seas were break- ing. The fore part was working in the seaway, but the after part was firmly wedged in the rocks. On account of the heavy seas it was impossible for many hours to get a boat alongside, or even to keep one abreast of the wreck, but cutters launched from the two warships towed Carley floats into position for drifting close by the Hong Joh, in the Hope that survivors would be encouraged to jump and swim for them. Some did so, but many were drowned through being washed against the iron plates and jagged edges of the broken ship. The fore part of the vessel was eventually borne over by the seas compelling, the forward” surt vivors to take to the rigging, whence mois of them were washed away and drowned. All day the bouts laboured, and although the wind decreased at sunset the crews were by that time so exhausted that they were recalled. At five o'clock the For glow had to leave, as her coal was run: ning short.
