THE CLASSICS.

PLACE IN EDUCATION.

The report has been issued of the com- mittee appointed by the Prime Minister to inquire into the position of the classica in the educational system of the country. It falls into place with reports of other committees which already have been pub- lished, or are about to bu, on the posi tion to be assigned to English, to Modern Languages. and to Natural Science. Theam together will form a comprehen- sive review of the entire feld, with re commendations as to the means by which the proper study of the different subjects тлу he maintained and improved. The classical committed numbers twenty wen and women. heads of colleges and public schools, scholars of acknowledged repute, and the like, with the Marquis of Crewe as chairman. All lay claim to the inestimable advantage of an education in which elnaaics played a conspicuous part.

...

Theil report is in the main a vindica tion of classics, not only as study in themselves. but as a ground work for other studies, and an almost passionate plea for their preservation in our éduca tional life. Grerk, they admit regret its fully, is in a bad way: Latin holds own, and is in some ways in increasing favour; and the need for both is as great as ever. But we live in changed wadi. tions, when time must be given for other studies.

"Creek, sir," said "Dr. John- one ccension, is like inces man gets as much of it as he can," To day scholars in bulk receive it in dimin ishing quantities, since it no longer holds its autocracy in the universities and graminar schools. But the committer phad that at least in the secondary schools, and for selected students. it should keep its place. They say:

son. оп

It is hardly a matter of surprise that the position which we claim for classics among the humane studies should be freely recognised by representatives pi other branches of the humanities. But experts in science and mathematics have combined with experts in modern history. geography, English, and modern langu ages to assure us of the value that. in different degrees, they all attach in the interest of their own subjects to a classi cal element in education." They all recognise that Latin at least provides an incomparable discipline for modern linguistic studies; that historical prob.

including those arising out of physical environment, can only be studied properly in relation to their origins which lie in a remote past-B conception which history owes largely to biological specialisation in science and

science; and that premature and narrow

defeats its own object. Many of them, we believe, would go further, and agree that no educated citizen of the British Empire can afford to ignore the example of the Romans in uniting in a contented nations and prosperous commonwealth differing widely in race, language, and culture; of that of the Greeks, with whom originated all our modern form of poetry, and philosophy, the conception ing democracy, and even the beginnings of physical science.",

general education of pupils in secondary. schools, and, on the other hand, that full opportunity is given to selected pupils everywher to carry their study of them to the highest point of which their capit city will admit. The position of Grok is admitted to be critical

Yet limita Ption of a knowledge of Greek to a few specialists would be an incalculable loss to the political, social, and spiritual life of the nation

The committee "cannot profes to feel satisfied with the prospect that the classics may increasingly come to be asso- tiated in the public mind with Latin alone"; but they consider that, in pre- sent conditions. the wisest course in the interest of classical studies as a whole is, wherever Greek cautiot be introduced, to strengthen in every possible way the position of Latin in the grant-earning schools.
