COST OF LIVING IN ENGLAND. NOTICES TO CONSIGNEES
MINISTRY OF LABOUR'S FIGURES
CHALLENGED BY LABOUR.
The joint Committee on the Cost of Living, a body appointed by the labour and trade union forces af Britain hag issued a preliminary report of its inves tigation,
DE
The committee challenges the Mini try of Labor's figures indicaung the rise and fall of the cost of living since 1914. The report holds that the Minist try's "index number seriously under- states the actual rise in the cost bying since the beginning of the war,
In view of the widespread attempts to enfores drastic reductions in wages, and the use of sliding scales based on the cost of living &gures, the Committee's challenge raises an important matter which will be immediaely nken up by the trade unions at wages conferences.
The Committee's inquiry, based on budgets of weekly family expenditure, shows that, on a ennervative esti mate, the cost of living in September. 1920, had increased 159 per cent, above that of 1919.
The importance of the difference be tween the Joint Committee's figure and that of the Ministry of Labour may be made clear by an illustration
Suppose a worker in receipt of a week ly wage of 20s, before the war has his Wages regulated by the Ministry of Intex number," Labour's
He would in September, 1999), be receiving Gas, 3. per week. According to Labour's "index number, he should have been paid 728. 3. per week, or 78. per week mare.
